Description

The Boone County Prosecutor’s Office is currently offering an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in public service and criminal law. We are seeking a full-time Deputy Prosecutor to join our team.

The Deputy Prosecutor will be responsible for representing the State of Indiana in criminal proceedings involving offenses ranging from misdemeanors through Level 6 felonies. Duties include reviewing criminal investigations, making charging decisions, appearing in court for hearings, bench trials, jury trials, and sentencing proceedings, negotiating plea agreements, preparing legal motions and briefs, working closely with law enforcement agencies, and maintaining communication with victims and witnesses throughout the judicial process.

The ideal candidate will possess strong legal research, writing, courtroom advocacy, and communication skills. Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Indiana or eligible for admission. While prior prosecutorial experience is preferred, motivated attorneys with a strong interest in criminal law and public service are encouraged to apply.

  • Performs, plans, organizes, manages, and directs the activities of criminal cases and trials.
  • Prosecutes cases from the initial review through sentencing/probation. 
  • Reviews case related information in preparing charges, including trial preparation with law enforcement personnel, witnesses and victims, reviewing search warrants and arrest reports, taking depositions, and preparing affidavits and charging information.
  • Prepares for hearings and/or trials, including filing documents, reviewing case law, preparing witness lists, preparing for jury selection, preparing arguments, and organizing trial exhibits. Researches and analyzes data from various sources in developing cases.
  • Appears in court for a variety of case-related proceedings, including, but not limited to, pre-trial conferences, changes of pleas, initial hearings, probation violation hearings, sentence modification hearings, sentencing, suppression hearings, post-conviction relief hearings, and jury and bench trials.
  • Negotiates pleas and/or prepares and files responses to pleadings and motions made by defendants and/or their attorneys.
  • Coordinates efforts in the prosecutorial process with the various Boone County Police departments.
  • Prepares correspondence and various legal documents, including discovery responses, subpoenas, search warrants, and restitution reports/contacts.
  • Will have some general after hours on call responsibilities – approximately 4 weeks a year.
  • Prepares and presents legal educational material for law enforcement/public forums. 
  • Maintains continuing legal education requirements and current knowledge of legal decisions, policies, and regulations, including attending professional conferences, training, seminars, and workshops.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Undertakes special projects at the direction of the elected Prosecuting Attorney.
  • Doctor of Jurisprudence with an active license in good standing to practice law in the State of Indiana. 
  • Knowledge and experience in criminal law, negotiation skills, plea drafting, time management, communication, legal research, interpretation, writing, and public speaking.
  • Knowledge of standard legal procedures and practices, with ability to effectively prepare and argue cases before the court.
  • Complete knowledge of and ability to apply state laws to a variety of individual situations and circumstances for the preparation and prosecution of cases before the court.
  • Working knowledge of standard office procedures and computer software programs used by the Prosecutor’s Office, with ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations.
  • Ability to use information sources regularly, such as Indiana Code, LexisNexis, IPAC, Indiana Rules of Evidence, Trial Rules, and The Blue Book-Citation System.
  • Ability to conduct legal research and interview and/or investigate offenders, victims, witnesses, crime scenes, and other persons/areas as individual cases demand.  
  • Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with co-workers, other County departments, Courts, law enforcement personnel, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with hostile/argumentative persons.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, often amidst frequent distractions and interruptions, and under pressure from formal schedules, deadlines, and high-volume operations.
  • Ability to occasionally work extended, evening, or weekend hours, and occasionally travel out of town for seminars/training conferences. Ability to occasionally respond to emergencies from off-duty status.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.

Individuals perform duties in a standard office environment and in a courtroom, involving sitting/standing/walking at will, standing for long periods, reaching, bending, lifting/carrying boxes and files weighing under 25 pounds, close/far vision, color/depth perception, speaking clearly, hearing/communication, handling/grasping objects, and driving. Individuals maintain considerable contact with victims and defendants and may be exposed to hostile/argumentative individuals.

Individuals occasionally work extended hours, evenings, and/or weekends, and occasionally travel out of town for seminars/training/conferences, sometimes overnight. Individuals occasionally respond to emergencies from an off-duty status.
