Full-time Professor - Indigenous Pedagogy Curriculum Consultant

Salary range is $77,153 to $133,752, established in terms of relevant educational qualifications and experience.

Learning & Teaching Services (LTS) at Algonquin College promotes teaching excellence by empowering faculty to learn, reflect, and evolve their teaching practice through a range of faculty development services. These include strategic explorations in teaching development, assessment design, digital pedagogy, artificial intelligence, Indigenous pedagogy, and learning design. Supported by a multidisciplinary team, LTS works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and departments to operationalize innovative strategies that advance student success.

Under the direction of the Chair, Teaching Excellence and Innovation, and in coordination with the Director of Indigenous Initiatives, the incumbent works collaboratively to design and implement programs that advance Algonquin College’s commitment to reconciliation by embedding Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and ways of knowing into curricula and teaching practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching Development

• Build and sustain meaningful relationships with faculty through one‑on‑one consultations that respect individual learning needs and support the exploration of Indigenous pedagogies.

• Develop professional learning opportunities (e.g., workshops, faculty development programs, Communities of Practice, Talking Circles, Learning Bundles, etc) and digital learning resources (e.g., online modules, handouts, videos, etc) to promote awareness of Indigenous pedagogies and knowledge across the college.

• Lead Indigenous pedagogy professional learning programs for faculty by providing regular feedback and guiding participants through assessments and curriculum.

• Support the meaningful integration of Indigenous histories, voices, perspectives, methodologies, and cultural practices into instructional strategies that will be applied to a wide range of academic programs, fields of study, and credentials.

• Contribute to college-wide Teaching Excellence initiatives by sharing lived experiences and leveraging relational pedagogies to build trust and respect within all learning environments.

• Collaborate with faculty to identify, coordinate, and, where appropriate, accompany Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community representatives in classroom settings, including collaboration with Student Navigators, in ways that respect protocols and community preferences.

• Collaborate with the college library to identify and curate meaningful learning resources that support faculty in integrating Indigenous knowledge into course curricula.

• Contribute to LTS service standards by offering scheduled in-person drop-in support for faculty inquiries and virtual options based on established departmental schedule.

• Participate in regular LTS departmental meetings to ideate and coordinate new teaching development activities alongside other team members.

• Support LTS operations by recording accurate engagement data across various initiatives including 1on1 consultations, program completions, and special projects.

Academic & Curriculum Leadership – Indigenous Pedagogy

• Apply knowledge of, and lived experience with, Indigenous pedagogies and decolonization strategies to enhance curriculum development processes.

• Organize and conduct individual and group consultations on the integration of Indigenous knowledge within established course and program development/renewal processes.

• Support course development projects by reviewing draft curriculum and proposing new resources or strategies that could support the college’s ongoing efforts to decolonize curriculum.

• Assist with the (re)design and development of Indigenous-focused courses and/or programs across the college.

• Contribute to quality assurance processes by consulting with faculty, academic leaders, Elders, knowledge keepers, community members, program advisory committees, students, and a variety of potential employers.

• Remain current in the field of study and maintain awareness of emerging trends and practices related to teaching and learning in higher education modeling the College values – Caring. Learning. Integrity. Respect.

Community Relationship  

• Maintain close relationships with the Mamidosewin Centre and the Indigenous Education Council to ensure consistent alignment of proposed Indigenous pedagogy related LTS activities.

• Build and maintain relationships with Elders, knowledge keepers and community members who can provide background and context to Indigenous knowledge through storytelling, artwork, ceremony, teachings or any other method.

• Liaise with community members, engaging in program, Department, School or Faculty, and College promotion.

• Participate   in   college consultative   committees, departmental/faculty meetings, talking circles, and others forms of gatherings that will help formulate strategies on embedding Indigenous ways of knowing and being across teaching and learning.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field of study; or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through post-secondary Indigenous pedagogy/curriculum development (please indicate the equivalency in your cover letter)

• Minimum three (3) years of teaching experience

• Must have successfully completed two or more curriculum projects or program development projects with Indigenous content

• Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous pedagogical methodologies

• Demonstrated ability to draw on lived experience to inform, ground, and strengthen Indigenous pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning

• Able to demonstrate close relationships with an Indigenous Nation, community, or Indigenous led organization

• Familiarity with an Indigenous language

• Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities

• Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum and public education materials as well as familiarity with issues pertaining to curriculum

• Capacity to engage members of diverse identities and skilled in a variety of consultation techniques, protocols and strategies

• Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, organizational, communication (oral and written), research and team building skills

• Experience in training, planning, preparing and delivering workshops and obtaining feedback

• Strong knowledge of Indigenous values, pedagogies, Nations and communities

• Strong organization, prioritization skills and ability to manage workload

• Demonstrated knowledge of student success strategies in a postsecondary setting

• Experience in the development and delivery of hybrid and online curriculum would be considered an asset
