How will you make an impact?

As an EHS Specialist II at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will help ensure workplace safety, environmental compliance and employee wellbeing while serving as a trusted advisor to site leadership and functional managers. You will develop, implement and maintain comprehensive EHS programs through proactive risk management, training, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement. You will also provide strategic leadership for the development, implementation, maintenance and continual improvement of the site's Environmental (ISO 14001) and Occupational Health and Safety (ISO 45001) Management System, aligned with applicable corporate and regulatory standards. A critical measure of success is the ongoing retention of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications.

What will you do?

EHS Management System

• Provide strategic leadership for the development, implementation and continual improvement of the site's EHS Management System (IMS) in alignment with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and applicable Thermo Fisher Scientific global standards.

• Drive the retention of all EHS ISO certifications through effective governance of internal audits, management reviews and cross-functional continuous improvement activities.

• Lead the planning, preparation and execution of third-party certification and surveillance audits in collaboration with process owners; oversee the management and closure of non-conformities and corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).

• Facilitate cross-functional engagement to ensure quality, environmental and safety requirements are embedded into operational processes.

• Oversee the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) framework to ensure alignment with regulatory, certification and corporate expectations.

Environment, Health and Safety (EHS)

• Develop and execute EHS strategies tailored to the manufacturing and handling of mining analysis equipment, including radiation-based technologies, aligned with the Thermo Fisher Scientific EHS Framework.

• Lead and govern the site's risk management processes, including facilitation of risk assessments, hazard identification, incident investigations and root cause analysis; ensure timely closure of corrective actions.

• Ensure systems and processes support compliance with relevant South Australian and federal regulations, including EPA SA, SafeWork SA and ARPANSA requirements.

• Lead site safety committees, emergency preparedness programs and behavioural safety initiatives that promote a proactive safety culture.

• Oversee environmental compliance programs, including hazardous waste management, emissions control, water usage and sustainability reporting.

• Develop and coordinate EHS training, onboarding programs and awareness campaigns for employees and contractors.

• Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies, certification auditors and Thermo Fisher Scientific global EHS teams.

• Lead the development and maintenance of emergency response procedures and ensure integration with the site's Business Continuity Plan.

• Provide governance and oversight of the Business Compliance and Capability Register to support regulatory, certification and operational readiness.

Keys to Success:

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Quality Management or a related discipline; equivalent experience will be considered.
• Formal training in ISO 14001 and ISO 45001; Lead Auditor or equivalent certification is highly regarded.

Experience

• 5-10 years of progressive experience in EHS roles, including demonstrated leadership of EHS Management Systems across multiple ISO standards.

• Proven capability in EHS Management System governance, audit leadership and continuous improvement within a regulated manufacturing environment.

• Demonstrated experience working cross-functionally with operational leaders and process owners to drive compliance, corrective action closure and sustained improvement.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Strong working knowledge of WHS legislation, environmental regulations, radiation safety requirements and ISO frameworks.

• Demonstrated expertise in risk management, incident investigation, root cause analysis and corrective action governance.

• Ability to integrate and align Environment and Safety processes to build a cohesive, high-performing management system.

• Strong leadership, stakeholder management, influencing and communication skills, with the ability to drive behavioural and cultural change.

• Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, deliver outcomes under pressure and operate effectively in a dynamic operational environment.

• Ability to conduct facility inspections and respond to emergencies, including activities that may require physical exertion.

• Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities.

• Ability to analyse EHS data and metrics to identify trends, risks and improvement opportunities.
