Commercial Underwriter

The Opportunity

Our client is a growing Canadian Property & Casualty insurance organization offering an entrepreneurial and collaborative environment where employees are encouraged to take ownership, contribute ideas, and make a meaningful impact.

We are seeking a Commercial Underwriter to join the underwriting team. Reporting to the Underwriting Team Lead, this individual will be responsible for underwriting new and renewal Commercial Property & Casualty business, developing strong broker and MGA relationships, and contributing to the continued growth of the organization’s commercial portfolio.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced underwriter who is comfortable working independently and is interested in taking on increased responsibility as the organization continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

• Underwrite new and renewal Commercial Property & Casualty business within established authority and guidelines.
• Manage the underwriting process from submission and risk analysis through to issuance and ongoing account management.
• Establish appropriate pricing, deductibles, limits, terms, and conditions.
• Evaluate risk exposures using mapping, catastrophe modelling, and other underwriting tools.
• Monitor industry and market trends and incorporate relevant insights into underwriting decisions.
• Contribute to portfolio analysis by identifying trends, opportunities, and areas for profitable growth.
• Support program and delegated underwriting authority activities, including analysis and performance monitoring.
• Contribute to the development of underwriting guidelines, tools, and risk appetite as the portfolio continues to expand.

Broker Relationships & Business Development

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, MGAs, and other industry partners.
• Provide responsive, knowledgeable, and solutions-oriented service.
• Identify opportunities that support profitable growth and strong client retention.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues and support positive outcomes.
• Share market knowledge and ideas that contribute to portfolio growth and stronger broker partnerships.

Qualifications & Experience

• 3+ years of hands-on Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting experience.
• Strong commercial property underwriting knowledge and sound underwriting judgment.
• Demonstrated ability to build strong broker relationships and identify business development opportunities.
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
• Comfortable working independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team.
• Adaptable, curious, and comfortable working within a growing and changing environment.
• Strong sense of ownership, accountability, and initiative.
• Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Assets

Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:

• Program or portfolio underwriting.
• Subscription business and split rating.
• Residential and Commercial Realty.
• Retail, Hospitality, Industrial, Warehouse, or Manufacturing risks.
• Course of Construction (COC) risks.
• Risk management and underwriting tools such as CAT modelling/mapping platforms.
• CIP designation or progress toward completion.
