The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology comprises specialists dedicated to providing the best possible care for patients with cancer and blood disorders.   

 

Our Community Hematology Oncology section (CHO) is focused on keeping patients close to home while receiving high-quality university care.  

 

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who will primarily support the Community Hematology Oncology clinic located in East Portland.

Function/Duties of Position

Position Summary:

 

OHSU classification: Clinical Associate APP 

Primary location: East Portland community clinic

Other locations: Occasional coverage at other community clinic sites: Beaverton, NW Portland, Tualatin, and Gresham locations

Schedule: 10-hour shifts, 4 days per week, may include weekends and holidays 

 

This position is represented by the Oregon Nurses Association & Advance Practice United, subject to the active collective bargaining agreement.

 

This position cares for patients in the Community Hematology Oncology (CHO) section, covering ambulatory, infusion, and hospital areas across multiple sites all days of the week.

 

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and demonstrate clinical knowledge and oncologic experience to support a complex patient population.

 

​The Clinical Associate-APP delivers care aligned with a defined scope of practice in Adult Medical Oncology, with work expectations operationalized through departmental workflows, productivity standards, and performance expectations consistent with the collective bargaining agreement and institutional policies.

 

 

Clinical Responsibilities:

• Address urgent needs and evaluate the patient situation and determine the tolerance of the treatment
• Review labs and modify orders, as needed
• Write chemotherapy orders in compliance with credentialed privileges
• Manage patient anticoagulation
• Respond to nurse questions and patient situations in the infusion room
• Work closely with phone triage staff to manage patient issues
• See patients as same day add-on, if needed
• Admit patients to community hospitals in collaboration with attending physicians
• Round on patients in community hospitals in collaboration with attending physicians, in compliance with community hospital credentialed privileges
• On call only as back-up for attending physician

Research Responsibilities:

• Assist in identifying patients eligible for clinical trials
• Assist in caring for patients in clinical trials, including completion of necessary documentation
• Participate in research projects as appropriate

Educational Responsibilities:

• Participates in the development of patient education tools and programs
• Provides individualized patient education on aspects of Oncology
• Assumes responsibility for educating others on aspects of Oncology and hematologic malignancies
• Participates in the teaching of medical, nurse practitioner and physician associate students if assigned

General Responsibilities:

 

All APPs are expected to maintain professional standards in all aspects of role performance, including consistent participation in unit and departmental meetings, routine monitoring and timely response to organizational communications (e.g., email), and adherence to established deadlines for institutional and departmental requirements.

Required Qualifications

Education:

 

Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing in a recognized APRN specialty (Nurse Practitioner)

Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant/Associate Studies from an accredited program (Physician Assistant/Associate)

 

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses: 

• ​​ ​Current RN and APRN licensure with the Oregon Board of Nursing
• Licensure with Washington Board of Nursing (within 90 days of start date)
• ​Current National Board Certification required, Oncology certification preferred
• ​DEA Certification

• ​Current PA licensure with the Oregon Medical Board
• PA licensure with the Washington Medical Board (within 90 days of start date)
• ​Current NCCPA Certification
• ​DEA Certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and patient management skills
• ​Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
• Effective communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams, including complex care discussions and transitions of care
• ​Ability to collaborate across disciplines and contribute to coordinated, comprehensive, team-based care
• ​Sound clinical judgment and decision-making, including the ability to recognize and respond to clinical deterioration
• ​Proficiency in documentation and use of electronic health record (EHR) systems
• ​Ability to adapt to changing clinical demands, workflows, and patient volumes
• ​Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety and quality care
• Ability to educate patients, families, and learners on complex disease processes, treatments, and supportive care needs
• ​Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, and reliability in meeting responsibilities and deadlines
• ​Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information
• Commitment to evidence-based practice, regulatory standards, and continuous professional development
• Commitment to carry out job responsibilities in an effective, ethical, and professional manner

Physical Demand and Equipment Usage:

 

Must be able to travel between floors, clinical offices, and locations

Preferred Qualifications

• One or more year of experience as an APP
• One or more year of experience in oncology
• Experience with EPIC and Beacon
• Exposure to clinical trial research
• Hematology/Oncology certification
• Advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and mangnement in complex hematologic/oncologic malignancies
• Strong clinical judgment and timely escalation of care for acutely ill and immunocompromised patients
• Proficiency in chemotherapy/biotherapy management, including monitoring and toxicity management
• Proficiency in EHR documentation, order entry, and utilization of oncology-specific treatment plans and pathways
