About the Seasonal Maintenance Aide Position

Seasonal Maintenance Aides perform manual labor duties to support the repair and maintenance of the City’s water, sewer, storm drain and streets facilities within the Public Works Department. This a non-benefited, part-time position, no more than 1000 hours per fiscal year.

Applications will be reviewed biweekly. Interviews may be scheduled at any time until the positions have been filled. This recruitment may be closed at any time, without notice. Prompt application is encouraged.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Cut, drag, remove and load trees, brush and grass from City maintained facilities, streams, and creeks
  • Perform weed and brush abatement.
  • Perform creek and debris clean-up
  • Shovel/dig, load, unload and transport earth, debris, or construction materials.
  • Use a variety of hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and gas-powered hand tools.
  • Load and unload medium and heavy-duty trucks by hand and using equipment. 
  • Clean and care for tools and equipment.
  • Install, replace and refresh roadway signage, pavement markings and curb paint.
  • Review service orders and process them accurately.
  • Set up traffic control; stand for long hours flagging traffic.
  • Assist Public Works Department with general street maintenance as needed.
  • Assist with filling, carrying and placing sandbags.
  • Fill potholes with temporary asphalt. 
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Uses and purposes of basic tools and equipment employed in repair and maintenance work.
  • Basic construction and maintenance methods and terminology 
  • Methods and procedures of safe work practices.

Ability to:

  • Work in hot, cold or rainy conditions for long periods of time.
  • Intermittently, sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 90 pounds or less.
  • Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
  • Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
  • Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Operate a computer terminal and use computer applications. 
  • Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.   A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Some experience in heavy manual labor is desirable.

Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. 

License and Certificate

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain such required license(s) may be cause for disciplinary action.
