The Department of Political Science at The Ohio State University invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of assistant professor. Successful applicants will have research and teaching interests in any of the following areas: methodological developments at the intersection of social science and AI/machine learning; the social and political consequences of reliance on algorithmic approaches to public policy implementation; the regulatory, political, or ethical challenges of the burgeoning reliance on AI in the public and/or private sectors.
Based in Columbus, Ohio, the position will begin in the fall of 2027. Preferred applicants will demonstrate the potential for a sustained and substantial body of work focusing on one or more of these areas. The position is open with respect to substantive focus or disciplinary subfield in Political Science. This position is part of the investment of The Ohio State University Provost in the Department of Political Science in Socio-Political Analysis and AI: https://polisci.osu.edu/good-to-great-proposal. The successful candidate will join a broader departmental initiative on socio-political analysis and AI that includes recent hires working on political methodology and the development of AI tools for social science research. This initiative provides substantial opportunities for intellectual exchange and cross-unit grant collaboration across methodological and substantive areas.
Performance Objectives
Responsibilities of the position include:
- Conduct research on advanced topics in the application of data analytics and AI to social scientific questions or the regulatory, policy, ethical areas, or consequences of AI for political or socio-economic outcomes
- Mentor and teach in these and related areas at the undergraduate and/or graduate level
- Engage with interdisciplinary efforts focused on data analytics and/or AI
Education and Experience Requirements
Required: Applicants must complete their PhD on or before August 15, 2027, in political science or a relevant field, and have the capacity to integrate methodological insights with substantive research demonstrated through a record of and/or promise of scholarly excellence.
Desired: Demonstrate the potential for securing external grant funding and mentoring undergraduate or graduate students. Preferred candidates will show a willingness to participate in interdisciplinary collaborative efforts.
