Description



The position plans and coordinates practice schedules, games, and activities for each middle school athletic team. The coordinator communicates regularly by phone and email with families, coaches, league officials, school administrators, students, and other stakeholders regarding team schedules, transportation/carpools, athletic program information, and related needs.


This position provides excellent customer service to students, parents, coaches, supervisors, and school administration while supporting the day-to-day operations of the middle school athletic program. Responsibilities also include assisting with the recruitment and coordination of coaches and developing new sports and athletic activities to expand opportunities for middle school students.


This is a part-time, non-benefited position supporting the middle school athletic program for approximately 10 months of the year. The position is employed by the City of Palo Alto.


  • Communicates with customers by phone and email, providing timely and professional assistance.
  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts recreational activities and programs for middle school-aged community members.
  • Recruits, interviews, and coordinates middle school sports coaches.
  • Serves as the onsite supervisor at JLS Middle School in Palo Alto, ensuring City and School policies and procedures are followed and monitoring practices and games.
  • Communicates practice and game schedules to coaches, customers, referees, and league officials.
  • Works Monday through Friday between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
  • Provides seasonal training and orientation to coaching staff.
  • Maintains current CPR and First Aid certification or obtains certification within six months of hire.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-management skills.
  • Strong professional email and correspondence skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • At least one year of experience serving as an athletic director at the middle school level.
  • At least one year of coaching experience, preferably in a middle school or youth sports setting.
