Job:

Graduate Assistant in Digital Humanities

The Digital Humanities Center (DHC) at Barnard College is in search of up to three Graduate Assistants for the 2026-2027 academic year to support teaching and learning among digital humanities researchers.

Job Description:

The DHC is a collaborative community where faculty, students, and staff explore humanities research as data and implement digital methods to communicate research for public engagement. Our programming includes both hands-on training and events that showcase innovative digital humanities endeavors. Classroom workshops include (but are not limited to) building websites in WordPress, collections in Omeka, working in GitHub, and constructing narratives in Twine, Storymaps, or TimelineJS.

Graduate Assistant activities may include designing lesson plans, leading discussions, teaching hands-on workshops, and mentoring undergraduate researchers. As part of their assistantship, Grad Assistants will undergo training in a variety of digital humanities methods and tools that enable them to be part of the wider digital humanities community on campus and beyond.

Graduate Assistants will be expected to work in-person on the Barnard campus (3009 Broadway). The part-time GA-ship will be approximately 12 hours per week during Fall and Spring semesters. After training sessions in early September, Graduate Assistants will be able to plan regular weekly schedules (with some possible variation during events or classes). Projects may vary, but will generally include working with classes and individual students on digital humanities assignments, designing workshops or tutorials, holding open hours in the DHC for consultations, and supporting programming and events.

Compensation is $33 per hour; 12 hours a week on average.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Applicants should be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for and experience in digital humanities research and/or teaching.

Proficiency in one or more digital humanities research methods or tools is strongly preferred. These may include (but are not limited to) data visualization, interactive storytelling, web design, building digital collections, or information architecture.

Must be currently enrolled in a graduate-level program in the humanities, humanistic social sciences, library and information science, or a related field.

Please include a CV, cover letter, and the names and contact information of two references with your application.

Review of applications will begin on August 1, 2026, and will continue until position(s) are filled. Questions can be directed to Dr. A.L. McMichael at [email protected].

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
