Learn to Swim Instructors at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and RPAC Recreation Natatorium are a select team of individuals that teach swimming lessons for participants 6-months through adults. Instructors teach skills in a logical progression, allowing participants to learn to swim and play safely in and around the water.
Classes are held during the academic year on Sundays 10:30am-5:00pm for group lessons and Sunday through Friday for private lessons. The Learn-to-Swim Program provides an increased emphasis in the areas of drowning prevention and water safety and an all-encompassing approach to swimming and water safety through the American Red Cross. Instructors may teach both Group and Private Lessons.
This position provides the opportunity to develop life and professional skills such as time management, responsibility attention to detail, adaptability, communication, and learning to work under pressure. Staff have the opportunity to work with groups and individuals of various ages.
This position is ideal for someone who is looking for a flexible, rewarding, and FUN job on campus! We do not have lessons on Saturdays in the Fall and are off during school breaks and holidays!
Requirements:
Experience in teaching group and/or private swimming lessons.
Complete the new hire evaluation.
Regularly attend and participate in meetings, in-service trainings, and skills checks.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the safety and care of students during specified class times.
Ensure adherence to American Red Cross Instructor guidelines.
Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of, and comply with, the facility rules, and policies and procedures, and consistently and appropriately enforce them as outlined in the Aquatic Staff Manual.
Develop safe, progressional, and age-appropriate lessons for group and private classes.
Prepare individual lesson plans and collaborate and plan with co-instructors when assigned shared classes.
Manage participant behavior in accordance with program guidelines.
Complete administrative duties such as submitting program paperwork in a timely manner and maintaining attendance sheets.
Communicate with swim parents (or adult participants) to provide feedback about swimmer progress.
Assist with strategic planning for the program and attend regular staff training sessions and meetings.
Consistently project a positive, professional image and always provide consistent high quality customer service.
Keep up to date with staff correspondence and updates.
Consistently demonstrate positive, effective communication skills.
Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
Availability Requirements:
Provide a schedule of availability to the scheduling supervisor as requested – staff will be scheduled shifts around academic commitments.
Ability to regularly work Sundays 10:30am-5:00pm.
Ability to regularly work one or more weekday evenings 4-8 p.m. for private lessons.
Ability to teach a minimum of 2 hours of private lessons a week.
Pay Rate:
$13.65 per hour (non-WSI)
$14.00 per hour (WSI Certified)
Merit increases may be available after semester of work.

A fingerprint background check – provided by OSU – is required for all positions working with minors on campus and will occur during the screening process.
American Red Cross CPR/AED-PR and First Aid certification is required within 90 days of hire – certification, if needed, is provided by OSU at no cost to you.
Employees will be required to participate in paid mandatory training at the start of and throughout their employment with Recreational Sports.
Staff will have the opportunity to participate in a FREE American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) class once hired if they desire to obtain that certification. Along with the certification, the staff’s pay will be increased to $14.00.

Area Statement: Individuals working in aquatics receive specialized training related to health and safety to meet the legal requirements outlined in the State of Ohio Pool and Spa Code. They maintain a high level of responsibility and are required to exercise sound judgement in the completion of their duties. Strong swimming skills are required for all positions.
