Job Description:
Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner.
Let me tell you about the role
The Senior Cloud Engineer is responsible for engineering, enhancing, and operating bp’s AWS Platform, ensuring it remains secure, reliable, scalable, cost-effective, and aligned with bp’s cloud strategy.
Working as a senior member of the AWS Platform Engineering team, this role delivers the technical capabilities that enable application teams across bp to consume AWS safely and efficiently. The role focuses on building reusable platform capabilities, improving existing services, removing technical debt, and continuously modernising the platform to take advantage of evolving AWS capabilities.
The Senior Cloud Engineer works closely with the AWS Platform Architect, Technical Delivery Lead, Platform Engineering teams, and peer technology services to translate architectural direction into practical, production-ready engineering outcomes.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring deep AWS expertise, strong software engineering practices, and the ability to solve complex technical challenges across the breadth of the AWS platform. The role does not have line management responsibility but provides technical leadership, mentoring, and engineering expertise within the squad.
The role requires a strong platform perspective - building reusable capabilities that can support many application teams rather than delivering one-off solutions.
What you will deliver
Engineer and enhance the AWS Platform
- Design, build, automate, and operate core AWS Platform capabilities.
- Deliver platform enhancements that improve security, reliability, scalability, cost efficiency, and developer experience.
- Build reusable platform services and automation that enable application teams to consume AWS effectively.

- Translate architectural designs and requirements into practical engineering solutions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of the AWS Platform operating model and engineering practices.
Modernise the platform and reduce technical debt
- Identify, prioritise, and remediate technical debt across AWS Platform services.
- Modernise existing capabilities to align with AWS guidelines and current service offerings.
- Continuously evaluate opportunities to simplify, automate, and improve platform capabilities.
- Ensure the AWS Platform remains current with evolving AWS services, features, and recommended architectures.
- Retire legacy approaches and introduce improved patterns where they deliver better security, resilience, or operational outcomes.
AWS platform engineering
- Develop and maintain AWS Platform capabilities across areas including:
- AWS Organizations and account governance
- Identity and access management

Software engineering and automation
- Develop automation and platform tooling using **Python** and **AWS CloudFormation**.
- Build maintainable, reusable, and testable code following modern software engineering practices.
- Create automated solutions that reduce manual operational effort and improve consistency.
- Supply to CI/CD pipelines, testing practices, and engineering standards.
- Use source control, code review, and deployment automation practices to maintain high-quality platform engineering.
Security, governance, and operational excellence
- Implement secure cloud engineering practices across AWS Platform services.
- Embed security controls, compliance requirements, and governance principles into platform capabilities.
- Support operational excellence through monitoring, observability, automation, and continuous improvement.
- Solve complex technical issues across AWS services and platform components.
- Supply to incident management, root cause analysis, and preventative improvements.
- Ensure platform capabilities meet reliability and resilience expectations.
AI and innovation
- Support bp’s ambition to accept AI by seeing opportunities to apply AI capabilities within the AWS Platform.
- Evaluate and adopt AI-enabled tooling that improves engineering productivity, automation, operational insight, and developer experience.
- Prototype and pilot new AWS capabilities, including emerging AI services, to assess their suitability for enterprise adoption.
- Maintain hands-on technical knowledge of evolving AWS services and cloud engineering practices.
- Use practical implementation experience to inform platform improvements and technical decisions.
Collaboration and partner engagement
- Work closely with the AWS Platform Architect to deliver the platform roadmap and architectural vision.
- Collaborate with Technical Delivery Leads, Cloud Engineers, and wider Platform teams to deliver outcomes.
- Partner with peer services including Connectivity, Identity, Security, and Enterprise Architecture.
- Work with application teams to understand requirements and enable successful adoption of AWS capabilities.
- Provide technical guidance and support to teams consuming AWS Platform services.
- Promote consistent engineering practices across the AWS community.
