Commercial Counsel
Lumentum | Greensboro, North Carolina (Onsite)
Lumentum is seeking a highly motivated Commercial Counsel to join its Commercial Legal Team. This position is based in our Greensboro, North Carolina office and is an onsite role. This attorney will serve as a strategic legal advisor supporting high-value commercial transactions across our global business. The role offers the opportunity to partner closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to structure, negotiate, and execute sophisticated commercial arrangements that support Lumentum's industry-leading photonics and networking technologies.
The successful candidate will lead complex, high-value commercial and supply chain transactions while serving as a trusted strategic advisor to business leaders across the company.
The ideal candidate combines exceptional legal drafting and negotiation skills with sound business judgment and a practical, solution-oriented approach.
What You'll Do
- Lead the drafting, negotiation, and execution of complex domestic and international commercial transactions with customers, suppliers, manufacturers, and strategic partners.
- Negotiate strategic customer and supplier agreements, long-term supply and capacity reservation agreements, manufacturing, OEM, EMS, procurement, sourcing, development, distribution, reseller, services, and other commercial agreements.
- Provide strategic legal guidance from deal structuring through negotiation, execution, implementation, and post-closing support.
- Partner directly with senior leaders across Sales, Global Supply Chain, Procurement, Operations, Finance, Product Management, Engineering, and Executive Leadership.
- Advise on forecasting, supply commitments, pricing, allocation, manufacturing capacity, warranties, indemnification, limitation of liability, intellectual property, and dispute resolution.
- Develop practical, business-oriented solutions that appropriately balance legal risk and commercial objectives.
- Drive continuous improvement through contract templates, negotiation playbooks, AI-enabled legal workflows, and scalable legal processes.
What Success Looks Like
- Serve as the primary legal advisor on commercial and strategic sales and supply chain transactions.
- Build trusted relationships with business leaders and become a go-to legal advisor for strategic commercial matters.
- Negotiate sophisticated agreements that enable business growth while appropriately managing legal and commercial risk.
- Help modernize the Commercial Legal function through process improvements, knowledge management, and AI-enabled legal tools.
- Deliver practical, timely legal advice that supports the company's business objectives while maintaining a strong risk management mindset.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
- 5–8 years of relevant legal experience, including experience at a nationally recognized law firm and, preferably, in-house with a technology, semiconductor, manufacturing, or industrial company.
- Significant experience independently negotiating sophisticated commercial transactions.
- Demonstrated ability to advise senior business leaders and influence business decisions through practical legal counsel.
- Strong understanding of commercial contracting principles.
- Exceptional drafting, negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple complex transactions simultaneously while maintaining excellent client service.
- Strong business acumen and ability to translate legal concepts into practical business advice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting semiconductor, electronics, manufacturing, networking, telecommunications, or other advanced technology businesses.
- Experience negotiating long-term supply, manufacturing, procurement, or strategic sourcing agreements.
- Familiarity with international commercial transactions and cross-border contracting.
- Experience improving legal operations through automation, AI tools, contract lifecycle management systems, or process optimization.
