About ACA
The workshop manufactures ductwork for commercial projects, ranging from smaller, varied orders through to large production runs of hundreds of units. Previous work includes the Boggo Road Cross River Rail project and 450 Queen Street.
The current challenge is a lack of day-to-day leadership on the workshop floor. Cheryl explained that production can become disorganised, mistakes aren't always picked up early, and overtime is sometimes needed to rectify issues.
They need someone who can take ownership of the shed and keep work progressing efficiently and correctly.
The role is entirely workshop-based, not a site-based Leading Hand position.
The Opportunity
ACA is seeking an experienced, hands-on leader to take ownership of its Clontarf workshop.
The business needs someone who can bring structure to daily operations, coordinate a small team of 4 currently, maintain quality standards and ensure production deadlines are met.
This is an opportunity to introduce practical improvements to workshop processes and take genuine responsibility for day-to-day operations.
Previous ductwork experience is not essential. Proven leadership and the ability to organise people and production are the priorities.
Key responsibilities
- Supervise, coordinate and motivate a workshop team of approximately four employees.
- Plan daily production schedules, allocate tasks and prioritise orders.
- Monitor progress to ensure quality and delivery deadlines are met.
- Identify errors early, minimise rework and improve production efficiency.
- Establish and maintain clear workshop procedures and accountability.
- Provide hands-on support with manufacturing and assembly as required.
- Read and interpret drawings where possible.
- Coordinate materials, workloads and production requirements with management.
- Maintain a safe, organised and productive workshop environment.
Note: ACA isn't requiring previous ductwork manufacturing experience. They're prioritising someone who has genuinely led a team and can run a workshop effectively.

What makes the opportunity attractive
The successful candidate will have the freedom to take ownership of the workshop and put their own stamp on how it's run.
Additional benefits discussed include a phone allowance, a performance-based bonus linked to on-time job delivery and potentially team performance, paid overtime when required. This can be elaborated on during interview.
There is a two-week Christmas/New Year shutdown.
There may also be a workshop relocation to Brendale within approximately 12 months, which is worth mentioning to candidates during screening.
Internal Client Insights – Recruitment Team Only
The workshop currently lacks consistent day-to-day leadership and accountability. Cheryl advised that disorganisation and errors have contributed to rework and unnecessary overtime.
The Production Manager is currently providing oversight but needs a dedicated person to manage workshop operations.
ACA is looking for someone who will take genuine ownership, establish expectations, improve workflow and create accountability across the team.
The successful candidate will need to be confident introducing changes and managing a team through improvements.
I'd broaden the search to candidates from sheet metal fabrication, general manufacturing, mechanical workshops, aluminium fabrication and other production environments.
Someone who's previously run a workshop team, understands drawings and knows how to keep production moving could be a better fit than an experienced duct installer who's never supervised anyone.
Key Screening Questions
- Tell me about the workshop or production team you've supervised. How many people reported to you?
- How did you organise daily workloads and ensure production deadlines were met?
- Have you introduced processes that improved efficiency or reduced mistakes and rework?
- How do you approach employees who aren't meeting quality or productivity expectations?
- Are you comfortable being hands-on while also supervising a team?
- Can you read and interpret manufacturing or construction drawings?
- Are you comfortable working in Clontarf, with a potential future relocation to Brendale?
- What's your availability, and are you open to temp-to-perm employment?
