Description

The Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety is a small, dynamic agency of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that fosters a statewide program of research, data analysis and information-sharing aimed at engaging health care agencies, providers, and consumers to enhance the safety and quality of patient care in the state.  The Center, named for a Boston Globe health columnist who died in 1994 from a preventable medical error, was re-established by Chapter 224 of the Acts of 2012, An Act Improving the Quality of Health Care and Reducing Costs through Increased Transparency, Efficiency and Innovation. It is supported by and shares space with the state’s Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA).

The Betsy Lehman Center seeks an experienced senior advisor to provide strategic guidance to the Executive Director on initiatives that advance healthcare quality, patient safety, and system improvement across Massachusetts. Working closely with Center leadership, the Senior Advisor will contribute subject matter expertise, advise on programmatic priorities, support stakeholder engagement efforts, and help identify opportunities to strengthen healthcare delivery, organizational learning, and safety culture across care settings.

This new role is a part-time contract position of approximately 20 hours/week with flexible hours for approximately 9 months with the opportunity to extend or modify. The Center operates on a hybrid work model, with designated days in the Center’s office at 501 Boylston Street, Boston. This contract position has the flexibility to work onsite or remotely. The hourly rate offered is between $100 and $130, commensurate with experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide strategic counsel to Center leadership on issues related to patient safety, healthcare quality, workforce development, and healthcare system improvement.
  • Contribute expertise and advise on the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Center’s curriculum development and educational content.
  • Assist in identifying emerging trends, innovations, and evidence-based practices relevant to patient safety and healthcare improvement.
  • Support the development of partnerships with healthcare organizations, academic institutions, professional associations, and other stakeholders in Massachusetts and nationally.
  • Participate in strategic planning activities and provide recommendations regarding future programmatic investments and opportunities.
  • Advise on approaches to measurement, evaluation, and dissemination of program outcomes and lessons learned.
  • Represent the Center in meetings, convenings, and collaborative initiatives with external partners as appropriate.
  • Provide consultation on initiatives spanning a range of healthcare environments, including ambulatory, acute, post-acute, and long-term care settings.
  • Serve as a thought partner to Center leadership on opportunities to advance statewide learning, leadership development, and safety culture.

  • Experience working across diverse healthcare settings and stakeholder groups.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
