Space Science Educator

The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) is currently seeking a Space Science Educator who is responsible for presenting and engaging the public in space science content within the OMSI Planetarium and at internal and external events. The position conducts console operations for astronomy and laser shows at the Planetarium. Space Science Educators maintain the appearance of the Planetarium and adjacent areas and usher Planetarium shows as needed.

 

What You Will Do:

• Operate and maintain console operations for the Planetarium, which includes theater automation, fulldome projection system, multimedia equipment, audio system, and laser equipment;
• Actively interact with Planetarium patrons-schools, families, children, and adults-while applying culturally responsive practices. Provide space science exhibit interpretation, demonstrations, and conversations;
• Lead and deliver space science-related classes and reserved Planetarium lab programming;
• Collaborate with Guest Services Ushers to maintain a safe, clean, and secure environment for guests. Perform walkthroughs to maintain appearance of public programming spaces;
• Remain knowledgeable of OMSI safety protocols and emergency procedures, which includes (but is not limited to) evacuations, first aid, and reconnecting lost children and caregivers.

 

What We Are Looking For:

• Knowledge of or ability to learn foundational space science content and processes;
• Comfort and ability to engage diverse populations of learners in interactive learning, with an emphasis on customer service and presentation;
• Exercises sound judgment and problem-solving while upholding high integrity and ethical standards;
• Demonstrated ability to pivot between individual and team work;
• Ability to model and support a positive team dynamic with paid and unpaid staff;
• Ability to adhere to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements;
• Proficiency with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office.
