Description
A DAY IN THE LIFE
As a Lead Environmental Manager, you'll provide environmental compliance leadership across the Major Projects Group's portfolio of utility-scale power generation projects, including renewable energy, nuclear, and gas generation facilities. Reporting to the Director of Engineering of the Major Projects Group, this role directs environmental consultants, ensures adherence to federal, state, and local environmental regulations, and serves as a key liaison between the project team, regulatory agencies, and Owner/developer environmental staff. This is a remote position requiring regular travel to project sites throughout the project lifecycle.
STEP INTO THE ROLE
- Provide environmental compliance oversight and technical guidance across multiple concurrent major projects, including renewable, nuclear, and gas-fired generation facilities.
- Direct and manage third-party environmental consultants and specialty subcontractors, including scope development, budget tracking, schedule management, and quality of deliverables.
- Collaborate closely with Owner/developer environmental and development staff to align on permitting strategy, compliance obligations, and environmental risk mitigation from early development through construction closeout.
- Review, interpret, and apply environmental permits and regulatory requirements, including NEPA documentation and federal, state, and local approvals.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans, and other site-specific environmental compliance plans.
- Conduct and oversee environmental compliance audits and site inspections; identify non-conformances and drive timely corrective action.
- Serve as a primary point of contact with regulatory agencies (e.g., EPA, USACE, USFWS, and state environmental agencies) for permitting, inspections, and compliance correspondence.
- Support pre-construction environmental due diligence, including desktop reviews, field assessments, and environmental constraints mapping.
- Track, analyze, and report environmental performance metrics, incidents, and corrective actions to project and Major Projects Group leadership.
- Deliver environmental training and guidance to project teams, craft supervision, and subcontractors on applicable requirements and best practices.
- Lead or support root cause analysis and lessons-learned reviews following environmental incidents or near-misses.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable environmental regulations, including the Clean Water Act (CWA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Clean Air Act (CAA), NEPA, and RCRA.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Natural Resources, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 6 years of progressive environmental compliance/management experience, with direct exposure to utility-scale power generation construction in renewable energy, nuclear, and/or gas generation projects.
- Demonstrated experience managing environmental consultants and coordinating multi-disciplinary teams.
- Working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations and permitting processes, including NEPA, CWA/Section 404, ESA, NHPA/Section 106, CAA, SPCC, and SWPPP/NPDES requirements.
- Proven experience collaborating directly with Owner/developer environmental and development staff on large capital projects.
- Strong project management, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel to project sites as needed (up to approximately 50%).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with GIS tools is a plus.
WHAT SETS YOU APART
- Professional certification such as Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS), or Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC).
- 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
- Experience supporting large-scale EPC or self-build utility-scale power generation projects.
- Master's degree in a relevant environmental or engineering discipline.
