Position Purpose
St. Peter's Hospital is seeking an experienced and collaborative Nurse Manager to lead our 4 GAB Observation Unit. This leader will be responsible for the clinical, operational, financial, and people management functions of a fast-paced observation environment that supports patient flow throughout the hospital.
The Nurse Manager will provide direct oversight of daily operations, staffing, quality outcomes, patient experience, and colleague engagement while driving initiatives focused on throughput optimization, reduction of Emergency Department and inpatient length of stay, and efficient utilization of hospital resources. This position plays a critical role in supporting organizational capacity management and ensuring timely, safe, and patient-centered care delivery.
What You Will Do
- Lead day-to-day operations of the Observation Unit, ensuring safe, high-quality patient care and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with Emergency Department, Hospitalist, Case Management, Utilization Management, Nursing Operations, and inpatient leadership teams to optimize patient throughput and care transitions.
- Identify, escalate, and resolve barriers impacting patient progression and length of stay.
- Drive initiatives that support reductions in Emergency Department boarding and inpatient length of stay.
- Ensure appropriate staffing alignment based on patient volume, acuity, and operational needs.
- Manage staffing resources effectively to reduce premium labor and incentive utilization while maintaining quality and service standards.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, patient safety, and colleague engagement.
- Monitor and improve key performance indicators including throughput metrics, patient experience, quality outcomes, productivity, and financial performance.
- Recruit, onboard, develop, and retain nursing talent while supporting professional growth and succession planning.
- Lead performance management, coaching, mentoring, and recognition activities for nursing colleagues.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current New York State Registered Nurse licensure.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN).
- Three (3) years of progressive clinical nursing experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in an acute care setting.
- Strong knowledge of patient flow, staffing management, quality improvement, and regulatory standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field.
- Previous leadership experience in Observation, Emergency, Medical-Surgical, Throughput, or Capacity Management environments.
- National nursing certification in a related specialty.

Pay Range: $50.85- $76.30 per hour
Pay is based on experience, education, skills, certifications, and internal equity. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be compensated on a salary basis equivalent to the stated hourly range. Geographic differentials may apply.
