About bp
Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world. In a time of constant change and possibility we need new talent to pursue commercial opportunities, fueled by world-class insight and expertise. We’re always striving for more innovative digital solutions, sustainable outcomes and closer collaboration across our company and beyond, and you could be part of that too. Together we continue to grow as the world’s leading energy company!
About the role
The Retail Power team brings together technical industry expertise, commercial insight and collaborative problem-solving to address the complexities of energy markets. The team supports competitiveness, pricing, margin performance and commercial growth initiatives across the wider Retail Supply organization. It works closely with Sales, Pricing, Gross Margin Reporting, Billing Operations, Costing, Portfolio Operations, Finance, Risk and Regulatory teams to improve the quality, speed and accuracy of decision-making.
Key Accountabilities:
- Analyze market conditions, competitor behavior and pricing trends within bp Energy Services and across deregulated energy markets.
- Design and own a structured competitive intelligence framework that makes it easy for Sales to capture detailed broker and customer feedback consistently across markets, products and customer segments.
- Develop creative methodologies for producing meaningful apples-to-apples comparisons when market feedback is incomplete, aggregated or based on products with different commercial structures.
- Analyze various levels of product-level, customer-level and market-wide feedback to determine whether observed differences are driven by price, ancillary-service treatment, fixed versus pass-through cost components, billing methodology, contract terms or other product-design or competitive supply differences.
- Challenge assumptions and identify differences in cost allocation, risk transfer, pass-through provisions and contractual structure that may affect the validity of a comparison.
- Become a key partner with Sales, Gross Margin Reporting, Billing Operations, Costing, Portfolio Operations and other interested parties to combine fragmented quantitative and qualitative data into a more complete view of competitive performance.
- Create simple tools, definitions and feedback processes that improve the quality, consistency and granularity of competitiveness data collected across the Sales organization.
- Generate key inferences from imperfect datasets, document analytical assumptions and distinguish confirmed findings from directional indicators.
- Track normalized comparison metrics over time to identify recurring themes, emerging trends, structural gaps and commercial opportunities.
- Develop and maintain market benchmarks, peer comparisons and competitive positioning assessments by market, customer segment and product.
- Translate market intelligence into actionable recommendations for leadership and commercial teams, including implications for pricing, margins, costs, product strategy and market approach.
- Design and maintain intuitive executive dashboards that clearly communicate normalized competitiveness, pricing and margin drivers, win/loss outcomes, data quality and emerging trends over time.
- Apply data-visualization judgment to select the right metrics, views and level of detail, enabling leadership to understand both outcomes and underlying drivers.
- Work closely with Costing to track the impacts of regulatory, market-design and rule changes that may affect competitive position, retail pricing or customer economics.
- Automate recurring analysis and reporting where practical to improve timeliness, consistency and scalability.
- Support growth initiatives, product development and market-entry assessments with fact-based competitive analysis.
- Serve as a subject-matter resource for competitive intelligence and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
Essential education, experience and job requirements:
- Senior in market analysis, energy pricing, commercial analytics or a substantially similar role.
- Undergraduate degree in Business, Economics, Statistics, Quantitative Finance, Engineering or a related analytical field.
- Strong understanding of deregulated energy markets and the commercial drivers of retail energy pricing and margin.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze retail energy product structures, pricing trends, market costs and commercial performance.
- Proficiency in collecting, querying, organizing and analyzing complex datasets and drawing logical, decision-useful conclusions.
- Demonstrated excellence in data visualization and dashboard design, including the ability to translate complex and imperfect datasets into intuitive executive-level reporting.
- Ability to synthesize broker and sales feedback with data from Gross Margin Reporting, Billing Operations, Costing, Portfolio Operations and other sources to generate defensible commercial inferences.
- Experience designing data-collection frameworks, taxonomies or workflows that improve the consistency and comparability of information gathered across multiple teams.
- Sophisticated proficiency in Excel and SQL; experience with VBA, Power BI or comparable analytical and visualization tools is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting insights and recommendations to leadership and commercial interested parties.
- Experience in retail power, ISO/RTO markets or another deregulated energy setting is strongly preferred.
Leadership Requirements:
- Demonstrate leadership, sound judgment and the ability to work autonomously in a fast-moving commercial environment.
- Be creative, resourceful and proactive when complete or directly comparable information is unavailable.
- Independently lead analytical projects and influence process improvements across multidisciplinary teams.
- Build effective relationships across Sales, Gross Margin Reporting, Billing Operations, Costing, Portfolio Operations and leadership teams.
- Communicate complex findings with clarity and confidence at all levels of the organization.
- Bring curiosity, commercial awareness and a strong desire to grow within the company.
