Perform basic laboratory functions including specimen processing, customer service, and data entry procedures in support of the hospital's mission of patient care. Train new staff in proper Laboratory Technician techniques and procedures. Collect, process, store and transport blood, body fluids and tissue specimens. Perform clerical functions such as faxing, copying and mailing of reports and answering the phones professionally.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High School Diploma or Equivalent. 

 To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level)   

1. West Virginia Point of Care Technician (PoC) License 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Phlebotomy Certification (CPT).

EXPERIENCE:

1. Six (6) months of Phlebotomy, Lab Assistant or Cytopreparatory experience.

1. Train new staff in proper Laboratory Technician techniques and procedures.

2. Perform daily secondary checks on the body fluid orders.

3. Coordinate documentation/reports for all instruments.

4. Prepare specimens in order to perform basic diagnostic procedures designed to contribute to accurate reproducible patient results.

5. Operate laboratory equipment/instrumentation for basic testing and specimen processing consistent with standard operating procedures.

6. Prepare reagents and solutions required to complete specimen processing and testing according to the standard operating procedures.

7. Perform quality control procedures under direct supervision to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation.

8. Perform routine maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment/instrumentation.

9. Report test results with limited errors and in a timely manner.

10. Utilize time, materials, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests and workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.

11. Complete assigned workload within established turnaround times by adjusting organization of work according to test ordering status.

12. Communicate any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the Supervisor/Manager.

13. Communicate any unusual medical/technical problems or unusual patient results.

14. Perform clerical duties as needed to support laboratory operations.

1. Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.

2. Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.

1. Able to use computer keyboard, monitor, mouse and calculator.

2. Able to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word and Excel).

3. Abel to use Fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
