Job Description

Endowed Leadership Opportunity – Brumley Chair in Neonatology

This recruitment is anchored by the opportunity to serve as the Jean & George W. Brumley Jr.

Endowed Chair in Neonatology. The Brumley Chair provides dedicated resources to support program

building, recruitment, and sustained research growth. This role is designed for a leader who will define the next phase of neonatal research and clinical excellence at MUSC.

MUSC offers a rare, fully integrated maternal–fetal–neonatal continuum that supports discovery from fetal diagnosis through neonatal care and long-term outcomes. As the only comprehensive academic children’s health system in South Carolina, MUSC provides a statewide referral base, robust telehealth infrastructure, and a diverse patient population that fuels meaningful clinical, translational, and outcomes research. This is a platform built for scale, influence, and sustained academic impact.

Why MUSC Neonatology — and Why Now

At MUSC, we are building a nationally competitive neonatology research program anchored in a fully

integrated maternal–fetal–neonatal continuum. Our goal is to translate discovery into improved

outcomes for the most vulnerable patients—newborns across South Carolina.

Clinical & Research Platform

Our Level IV NICU provides high-acuity, high-volume care with a diverse patient population, including

extreme prematurity, complex congenital disease, and neonatal brain injury. This clinical depth

supports impactful clinical, translational, and outcomes research.

Maternal–Fetal–Neonatal Continuum

MUSC offers a unique opportunity to study disease across the full continuum—from fetal diagnosis and intervention through neonatal care and long-term outcomes—enabling longitudinal and mechanistic research rarely achievable at a single institution.

Darby Children’s Research Institute

Our dedicated pediatric research institute integrates basic science, developmental biology, and clinical research. Areas of strength include lung development, inflammation, brain injury, and organ system maturation—directly aligned with neonatal research priorities.

Statewide Impact & Data Advantage

As the only comprehensive academic children’s health system in South Carolina, MUSC offers a

statewide referral base and telehealth infrastructure. This enables population-level research,

implementation science, and meaningful impact on neonatal outcomes across diverse and underserved communities.

Strategic Growth Areas

• Prematurity and lung development

• Neonatal brain injury and neurodevelopmental outcomes

• Maternal–fetal interactions and perinatal biology

• Inflammation, infection, and organ injury

• Outcomes research and implementation science

The Opportunity

We are seeking neonatology investigators who want to build programs, lead nationally, and translate

discovery into improved outcomes for newborns. The Brumley Chair provides a platform to recruit

teams, expand infrastructure, and establish MUSC as a national leader in neonatal research

Opportunity Highlights

  • Jean and George W. Brumley Jr. Endowed Chair in Neonatology
  • Leadership role within a Level IV, high-acuity NICU
  • Integrated maternal–fetal–neonatal clinical and research continuum
  • Dedicated resources for program building and faculty recruitment
  • Darby Children’s Research Institute with state-of-the-art core facilities
  • Strengths in lung development, brain injury, inflammation, and organ maturation
  • Statewide referral base enabling population-level research
  • Emphasis on translational science and implementation research
  • Collaborative, interdisciplinary academic environment
  • Opportunity to define a nationally visible neonatal research agenda
