Patient Transporters ensure that patients' medical equipment is properly secured during transport, and they maintain cleanliness and safety throughout the process.
As frontline members of the patient care team, Patient Transporters play a crucial role in enhancing patient experience, quality of care, and patient flow. Their attention to detail, empathy, and professionalism are key to delivering exceptional patient care.

  • Provides safe patient handling by using proper transfer and lift devices, while employing safe body mechanics during patient transfers and transport of both the patient and equipment.
  • Secures patient’s medical equipment (e.g., IV lines, pumps, monitors, oxygen tanks, etc.) during transport, maintaining cleanliness and safety throughout the process.
  • Identifies patient’s fall risk and implements general patient fall reduction strategies (e.g., bed in low position, bed/chair alarm, call bell within patient’s reach, etc.) before, during and after completion of transport.
  • Cleans and disinfects patient transport equipment and/or shared hospital equipment before and after use per hospital policy and procedures.
  • Adheres to organization’s infection prevention guidelines and practices (e.g., handwashing, PPE use, etc.) to ensure patient and staff safety and reduce the transmission of infections.
  • Demonstrates use of AIDET (acknowledge, introduce, duration, explanation, and thank you) at the beginning and end of patient transport.
  • Provides patient comfort during transport by positioning the patient and medical equipment properly, applying sheets or blankets for privacy and warmth, and communicating expectations  of the process (e.g., “going over a bump”).
  • Observes and monitors the patient’s physical and mental status during transport to identify changes in condition; communicates noted changes to the patient’s primary nurse or closest clinical team member; initiates MSET or Code process as indicated for emergent situations.
  • Demonstrates safe patient hand-off communication at all transitions of care; communicates all identified patient needs and pertinent information to the nurse or designated clinical team member; escalates patient concerns via the chain of command.
  • Monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and materials during transport, which may include portable oxygen, to ensure their continued availability and non-interruption of services.
  • Ensures proper functioning, safety, and storage of transport equipment in designated areas; identifies and reports transport equipment malfunctions per hospital’s policy and procedure.
  • Performs transport assignments as assigned via the electronic transport algorithm and/or at the direction of the transport dispatcher or transport leadership; utilizes mobile transport applications to track initiation, progress and conclusion of transport assignment.
  • Transports designated equipment (per department guidelines) to and from different departments and areas within the healthcare facility.
