Role summary:The Principal Software Engineer leads the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving technical excellence across multiple teams. This role oversees the full software development lifecycle, applying cloud-native architecture and AI/ML integration to build intelligent, reliable systems. The position requires strategic technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration with cross-functional partners to align engineering efforts with business objectives. About the team:
The Stride Transportation Platform team at Walmart develops advanced Transportation Planning, Optimization, and Execution systems supporting the entire supply chain network. Handling millions of shipments annually, the team enhances transportation forecasting, routing, carrier optimization, and capacity planning to reduce costs, improve delivery reliability, and lower emissions. Managing complex logistics involving millions of routes and thousands of facilities, the team addresses some of the most challenging engineering problems globally. Members apply cloud-native architecture, AI integration, and innovative design to build scalable, high-impact solutions that ensure products reach customers and stores efficiently and sustainably.
What you'll do:
- Lead platform engineering efforts by delivering scalable infrastructure, reusable tooling, and cloud-native architectures aligned with strategic roadmaps.
- Drive full software development lifecycle management, including design, testing, deployment, and maintenance of distributed systems optimized for AI/ML integration.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, promoting best practices, architectural standards, and innovation.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into actionable technical requirements and measurable success metrics.
- Ensure high system availability, fault tolerance, and performance through sound architectural decisions and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Foster knowledge sharing by publishing technical insights and contributing to engineering communities.
What you'll bring:
- Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, delivering scalable and reliable cloud-native architectures.
- Proven expertise in designing and implementing distributed systems optimized for real-time data processing and AI/ML integration.
- Strong proficiency in software development lifecycle management, including CI/CD pipelines, testing, and observability.
- Demonstrated ability to apply model-driven design and leverage AI agents for intelligent software solutions.
- Skilled in mentoring and providing strategic technical guidance to engineering teams.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.
- Effective collaboration and communication across cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
