The Director of Engineering and Security at Black Rock Mountain Resort is a senior leader responsible for the full operational integrity of one of Utah's most distinctive hospitality and events properties. This role oversees all aspects of engineering, facilities maintenance, infrastructure management, and property security across the hotel and the adjoining ice hockey events center, a multi-faceted leadership responsibility that requires broad technical expertise, sharp operational instincts, and a genuine commitment to the safety and well-being of every guest and team member on property.
The Director of Engineering and Security ensures that every system, every space, and every piece of equipment on property is running safely, efficiently, and to the high standards our guests and event clients expect. From managing preventative maintenance programs and capital improvement projects to overseeing ice rink refrigeration systems, leading a security team, and ensuring regulatory compliance, this role sits at the intersection of hospitality operations, specialized facility management, and property safety. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Hotel Operations and Facilities
- Lead, manage, and develop the Engineering team, including hiring, scheduling, training, performance management, and daily direction of maintenance staff.
- Oversee all hotel systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire safety, life safety, and building automation systems.
- Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for all hotel equipment, systems, and guest room assets.
- Ensure the hotel property, including guest rooms, public spaces, back-of-house areas, exterior grounds, parking areas, signage, and resort amenities, is maintained in excellent condition at all times.
- Respond to and resolve maintenance requests through the work order system (HotSOS or equivalent), prioritizing guest-impacting issues with urgency.
- Oversee outdoor property maintenance including landscaping coordination, snow removal, walkway clearing, and exterior lighting upkeep.
- Partner with Housekeeping, Front Office, and other departments to coordinate room maintenance, renovation projects, and property improvement initiatives.
- Manage vendor and contractor relationships for specialized repairs, inspections, and capital projects, including soliciting bids, overseeing work quality, and ensuring on-time delivery.
- Develop and manage the Engineering department budget, including labor, supplies, vendor contracts, and capital expenditures.
- Ensure full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements including OSHA, fire codes, building codes, and ADA standards.
- Maintain accurate records of all work performed, maintenance logs, inspection reports, permits, and equipment warranties.
- Lead the department's emergency response protocols, including on-call availability for urgent facility issues.
- Events Center and Ice Rink Operations
- Oversee all engineering and facilities functions specific to the ice hockey events center, ensuring the venue is maintained and operational for all scheduled events, practices, and public use.
- Manage and maintain the ice refrigeration and rink systems, ensuring optimal ice quality, surface conditions, and system performance year-round.
- Knowledge of CIMCO Refrigeration systems and ice surface products such as Jet Ice is preferred but not required, willingness to learn and become proficient is expected.
- Monitor refrigeration plant operations including compressors, condensers, brine systems, and associated controls, identifying and resolving issues proactively.
- Coordinate ice resurfacing schedules and equipment maintenance for Zamboni or equivalent ice resurfacing machines.
- Ensure all events center systems, including lighting, HVAC, sound, dasher boards, locker rooms, and public areas, are event-ready and properly maintained.
- Partner with the Events and Sales teams on event setup requirements, technical needs, and venue-specific logistics.
- Ensure the events center meets all safety, health, and regulatory requirements, including refrigerant handling compliance.
- Manage the transition and preparation of the venue between events, and practice sessions to minimize downtime and maximize operational readiness.
- Develop and execute a preventative maintenance schedule specific to ice rink infrastructure and events center systems.
- Security Operations
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and manage the property security team across both the hotel and events center, ensuring adequate coverage at all times including events, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Develop, implement, and maintain security policies, procedures, and protocols in alignment with resort standards and applicable laws and regulations.
- Oversee all property surveillance systems including CCTV cameras, access control systems, key card management, and alarm systems, ensuring all equipment is fully operational and regularly tested.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the resort and local law enforcement, emergency services, and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Conduct and oversee incident investigations, documenting findings accurately and thoroughly, and communicating outcomes to resort leadership and Human Resources as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable security and safety regulations, including proper documentation of incidents, near-misses, and corrective actions.
- Develop and lead property-wide emergency preparedness planning, including evacuation procedures, crisis response protocols, and staff training.
- Partner with the Events and Sales teams to assess and plan security staffing and protocols for large-scale events, concerts, tournaments, and high-profile gatherings at the events center.
- Maintain a visible, professional security presence that reflects the resort's People First culture, balancing firm policy enforcement with warm and respectful guest interactions.
- Identify and address potential security vulnerabilities across the property, recommending and implementing improvements proactively.
- Oversee the lost and found program in coordination with Housekeeping and Front Office

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the property for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching across various work environments.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Comfortable working in a wide range of conditions including heat, cold, wet environments, mechanical spaces, and on or around ice surfaces.
- Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces as needed.
- May be exposed to hazardous materials, refrigerants, or elevated noise levels, appropriate PPE will be provided and required.
