Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is seeking a Casual Technical I&T Mechanical Technician – Level 3 to join our team in Wallops Island, VA.     

This position is a Casual/On-Call employee working on an hourly basis. The salary range is based on a full-time schedule and will be prorated to the extent the schedule is reduced. Traditional employee benefits are not offered for Casual/On-Call employees.

This position is fully on-site.  Relocation assistance is not available.

As an integral member of the mechanical integration, test, and launch operations team, the I&T Mechanical Technician 3 supports the integration and test of the Antares launch vehicle to deliver supplies and scientific equipment to the International Space Station under the NASA Commercial Resupply Services (CRS2) contract.  Candidates will perform a variety of duties assisting mechanical engineers in the final assembly, integration, test and flight of the Antares launch vehicle systems.   

Responsibilities may include:

• Under engineering supervision, performs technical functions supporting activities such as integration, test, checkout, operation, and maintenance of complex flight systems and ground support equipment.

• Hands-on mechanical integration, test and check-out of flight hardware;

• As part of a small team, perform test procedures in manufacturing and launch pad environments. 

• Maintain proper documentation records for all flight hardware assembly, integration and test activities

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with vehicle Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, Quality and Safety Teams.

• Maintain launch day schedule by performing other duties as necessary.

• Recognize design deficiencies or malfunctions where immediate determinations regarding causes and needed corrections are required.  Troubleshooting, documenting and pursuing root cause of discrepancies found with flight hardware.

• Fabricate and assemble new or modified mechanical components or assemblies.

• Work in a fast-paced team environment supporting launch vehicle hardware, system and subsystem level integration, test and launch operations. 

• Operate and maintain Ground Support Equipment for manufacturing and launch operations. 

• Perform a wide variety of non-standard tasks in the mechanical and electrical areas

Experience Requirements:

• The candidate will possess the ability to work from schematics, drawings, diagrams, procedures, written and verbal descriptions, layouts or defined plans to perform assembly, integration, testing, checkout and troubleshooting.

• Prior experience following written procedures verifying the configuration and functionality of systems and equipment to ensure conformance with specifications desired but not required.

• Experience using basic hand tools  

• Experience integrating space-flight instruments and/or spacecraft or related mechanical components and systems is desirable but not required.

• Documentation skills and experience on common PC desktop applications are also required.

Basic Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent with 5 years of related experience

• Must be able to read technical drawings and use basic hand tools

• Ability to work in a fast pace team environment and multi-task

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Willing to work overtime and 2nd shift operations on occasions as required

• US Citizenship is required

 Preferred Qualifications:  

• Aerospace and Defense experience

Primary Level Salary Range: $1.00 - $2.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
