SUMMARY:
This position is primarily responsible for handling investigations by assisting members who have experienced fraudulent transactions or suspect inappropriate access to their accounts at Georgia’s Own. The position is also responsible for validating the identities of new members and monitoring and/or researching information to determine if account holders are attempting high-risk activities that expose the credit union to financial risk, as well as potential legal and regulatory risk.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct and coordinate reviews of transactional information to detect cases of fraudulent activity (e.g., check kiting, structuring, transferred funds and fraudulent claims for reimbursement, etc.).
  • Develop and implement methods of detecting financial fraud through the identification of suspicious transactional patterns or errors.
  • Address member inquiries regarding suspicious transitions and/or inquiries on account(s) and determine if an investigation should be opened.
  • Identify the specific nature of the crime, including its perpetrators and the methods used to commit the fraud, including detailed documentation of the findings for law enforcement and for developing additional safeguards and fraud detection methods.
  • Maintain compliance with credit union policies and applicable laws related to account management, fraud and its investigation; and in many fraud investigations, facilitate the filing of Suspicious Activity Reports (SAR) required by the Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering Act which governs the disclosure of financial account information to law enforcement agencies. If appropriate, coordinate findings with law enforcement officials for further investigation, supplying evidence and prosecution.
  • Coordinate the recovery of money lost due to fraud thorough appropriate means (e.g., freezing account, bond claims, affidavits, etc.).
  • Develop and/or update risk management plans to aid in the reduction of losses due to fraud through the identification of fraud trends and implement counter measures, as well as develop strategies, both legal and internal, to facilitate the recovery of funds lost due to fraud.
  • Conduct reviews of new account and loan applications to ensure that the credit union’s policies regarding consumer information is properly documented and that the accounts are checked against OFAC.
  • Ensure timely response to law enforcement regarding criminal subpoenas requesting documentation from Georgia’s Own.
  • Timely preparation of reports and monitoring of check hold requests and releases.
  • Work required reports in the Verafin system, BioCatch, and Payrailz (i.e. watch list, check kitting, red flags, P2P, A2A, bill pay, and stolen checks.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration is desired; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in BSA compliance or handling fraud investigations and inquires preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Professional certifications highly desired for the position include one or more of the following:
  • BSACS – Bank Secrecy Act Compliance Specialist (or equivalent)
  • CFCI – Certified Financial Crimes Investigator or CFE Certified Fraud Examiner

ADDITIONAL/IMPORTANT SKILLSETS:

  • Strong aptitude to research and identifies transaction patterns that are out of the ordinary and require additional due diligence
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • High degree of confidentiality due to the nature of the position
  • Effective written communication and verbal communication skills

To perform this job successfully, the employee must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. All employees must be able to communicate face to face or through technology with or without reasonable accommodation. Employee will be in an office environment (well-lighted, heated, and air-conditioned) typically stationed at a desk or table. Employee will be asked to sit and stand for various increments of time, and to lift/push up 10 lbs. Clerical office duties on various forms of technology are required. All positions that have lending responsibilities must comply with all requirements under the SAFE ACT, as well as the Credit Union’s policies and procedures related to the SAFE ACT. This includes an obligation on the employee’s part to ensure that NMLA registration pertaining to the SAFE ACT is kept current. The employee must notify the Credit Union within 30 days of any changes that need to be reflected on the NMLS registry.
