Job Summary
CHILD-BRIGHT is a pan-Canadian research network focused on improving life outcomes for children with brain-based developmental disabilities and their families. Its work is carried out within Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research. The Senior Manager, Communications & Marketing is the central communications lead for the pan-Canadian CHILD-BRIGHT Network. Working within approved network priorities and with a high degree of autonomy, the position shapes, implements, and evaluates the communications plan; leads communications projects; provides advice to network programs and leaders; and coordinates digital channels, communications staff, and external service providers. The work informs and engages families, persons with lived experience, researchers, trainees, partners, funders, media, and the public.
The position translates scientific, operational, and community priorities into clear, accessible, and audience centered communications. It identifies opportunities to improve the network's approach and leads the development of recommended changes with the Director of Operations and relevant programs. The CHILD BRIGHT Executive Committee provides final approval for the overall strategy and designated high profile or sensitive communications. The position is employed by UBC as the network's administrative home. Its mandate is network wide and is not limited to UBC led projects or activities.
Organizational Status
For institutional and administrative purposes, the position reports to the UBC Principal Investigator. The Director of Operations provides day to day operational direction. Network priorities and major communications are governed by the CHILD BRIGHT Executive Committee, which includes the Scientific Co Directors and leads from the network's five Service Programs. The Senior Manager works across institutions and programs with scientific and operational leaders, researchers, trainees, persons with lived experience, families, committees and councils, funders, partners, and communications professionals. Program representatives and lived experience partners are engaged to co design or inform communications for their programs and audiences.
Work Performed
Communications planning, strategy implementation, and advisory services
- Leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of the communications plan and translates it into annual and project specific work plans.
- Defines communications project objectives, audiences, key messages, channels, schedules, deliverables, approval pathways, and performance measures in consultation with network leaders and program teams.
- Reviews audience feedback, channel performance, emerging issues, and network priorities; identifies opportunities and recommends changes to communications approaches, tools, and priorities.
- When material changes to the network strategy are required, leads the development of recommendations with guidance from the Director of Operations and input from relevant programs, committees, and lived experience partners for Executive Committee approval.
- Provides consultative communications and marketing advice to Service Programs, committees, researchers, trainees, and network leaders, including advice on audiences, messaging, channels, accessibility, timing, and risk.
- Participates in developing and refining network communications standards, procedures, editorial practices, and approval protocols, and supports their consistent application across the network.
- Independently plans and coordinates multiple communications projects from intake through completion, establishing scope, schedules, responsibilities, deliverables, quality standards, and stakeholder review requirements.
- Researches, writes, edits, and coordinates production of Reports to Community, newsletters, impact narratives, presentations, brochures, event materials, briefing materials, award nominations, and other internal and external communications products.
- Develops accessible, plain language stories that accurately convey research findings and the experiences, contributions, and impact of children, families, persons with lived experience, researchers, trainees, and partners.
- Coordinates subject matter review, consent, French translation, accessibility review, design, production, and distribution so that products meet approved standards and deadlines.
- Supports the communications components of network events, conferences, funding proposals, grant applications, and funder reports through project coordination, editing, plain language translation, and message development.
- Maintains integrated editorial and production schedules, resolves routine project issues, communicates changes, and reports on progress and results.
Digital communications and audience engagement
- Working with the Director of Operations, leads the operational planning and communications direction of website redevelopment and enhancement projects, coordinating internal contributors and technical service providers.
- Oversees day to day content planning and maintenance for child bright.ca, social media, email communications, and other internal and external information sharing tools.
- Develops channel and audience engagement approaches for researchers, families, partners, funders, media, and other stakeholders, and coordinates implementation with internal contributors and service providers.
- Uses web, email, and social analytics, audience feedback, and communications best practices to assess performance and recommend improvements to content, discoverability, reach, and engagement.
- Collaborates with the Knowledge Mobilization Program and other network teams to package and disseminate research and knowledge products through appropriate network channels.
Brand, media, and stakeholder communications
- Maintains and make changes to CHILD BRIGHT brand framework, advises network contributors on its application, and recommends updates when needs or audiences change.
- Develops network messages, media releases, briefing materials, and responses to media or public inquiries, coordinating fact checking and approvals in accordance with established protocols.
- Supports grant applications, funding proposals, award submissions, and related organizational priorities through scientific and plain-language writing, editing, impact storytelling, message development, and communications coordination.
- Builds relationships with communications professionals across partner institutions, research networks, health organizations, foundations, and related sectors to coordinate activities and share effective practices.
- Develops and supports a community of network champions to extend the reach of approved research, impact stories, and knowledge products.
- Represents CHILD BRIGHT in communications related meetings and activities within approved network positions and messages.
Resource, service provider, and team coordination
- Contributes to annual communications resource planning and financial reporting by developing project estimates, identifying priority needs, monitoring approved communications line items, and recommending adjustments.
- Identifies and evaluates internal and external service providers; obtains estimates; selects or recommends providers in accordance with approved allocations and procurement requirements; develops scopes, schedules, and deliverable requirements; and directs and monitors services for quality, timeliness, value, and adherence to network standards.
- Supports procurement and contract discussions, administers approved service agreements, and verifies completion of approved work. Expenditure and contract approvals remain with the authorized budget holder and the Executive Committee, as applicable.
- Coordinates translation, design, web, production, event, and other communications services and resolves routine issues within approved project parameters.
- Provides day to day direction and coordination to communications staff, project contributors, contractors, vendors, and service providers assigned to network communications activities.
- Maintains project records, content inventories, templates, guidelines, vendor information, and performance data required for continuity, reporting, and evaluation.
- Explores responsible uses of AI and emerging technologies to support the portfolio; however, it is not intended to replace the incumbent’s authorship of written communications.
Consequence of Error / Judgment
The position exercises judgment, tact, discretion, and initiative when translating scientific information, lived experience, funder commitments, and network decisions for diverse audiences. Inaccurate, inaccessible, untimely, or unauthorized communications could misrepresent research or community perspectives, undermine trust with families and partners, affect funder confidence, delay network activities, or damage CHILD BRIGHT's reputation. Errors published through national digital channels may reach broad audiences and be difficult or costly to correct. The Senior Manager verifies information, follows consent, accessibility, brand, and approval requirements, and escalates sensitive, uncertain, or potentially high impact matters before publication. Judgment is also required to balance competing deadlines, stakeholder needs, available resources, and quality standards across several concurrent projects.
Supervision Received
Receives day to day operational direction from the CHILD BRIGHT Director of Operations and reports to the UBC Principal Investigator for institutional and administrative purposes. Within approved goals, guidelines, and standards, the position independently plans and carries out communications projects. Major priorities and designated high profile or sensitive outputs are reviewed through the network's governance and approval processes.
Supervision Given
Provides day to day leadership, work direction, and coordination to communications staff and project contributors assigned to network communications activities. Directs and monitors the work of external contractors, vendors, translators, designers, web providers, and other service providers.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Demonstrated experience providing communications advice and independently managing projects, including scope, schedules, budgets or cost estimates, deliverables, approvals, and quality standards; strong judgment, organization, initiative, and attention to detail.
- Excellent research, writing, editing, plain language, presentation, storytelling, and interpersonal skills; experience developing impact narratives, reports, newsletters, award nominations, and funder facing materials.
- Experience coordinating website, email, social media, marketing, event, and public engagement activities; knowledge of digital content strategy, user experience, content discoverability, web analytics, and web content best practices; proficiency with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, content management systems, email marketing systems, social platforms, and Curiosity and willingness to explore responsible uses of AI and emerging technologies Experience identifying, coordinating, and directing external contractors and service providers, and providing work direction to staff or project teams in a collaborative, respectful environment.
- Knowledge of accessible and inclusive communications practices and experience working with persons with lived experience or community partners.
