AI Integration Lead

Application Deadline: 30 August 2026

Department: Core Operations

Employment Type: Flexible

Location: Remote

Compensation: $132,986 - $146,447 / year

Description

Please click "Apply Now" to respond to the initial questions in the application form and submit your CV / Resume and cover letter. We ask that you spend no more than 2 hours preparing your responses to the prompts.

Application Deadline: Sunday, August 30, 2026, at the end of the day (23:59) Anywhere on Earth (UTC-12:00).
Our staff's time is one of RP's tightest bottlenecks. Over the last year, AI tools have crossed a threshold where they can meaningfully accelerate serious knowledge and administrative work. But they're also uneven, and it's easy to feel faster while producing plausible-sounding work that doesn't hold up. As an organisation that cares about getting things right, we don't want to adopt AI on vibes. We want to know, rigorously, where it genuinely improves our work and where it doesn't.

That's what this role is for. You'll lead RP's effort to figure out — empirically — which of our research and operational tasks AI can reliably and usefully augment, build and deploy the tools and workflows that prove out, and steer us away from the ones that don't. This is as much a measurement and research problem as an adoption one, which is why we want someone who understands both research rigor and the real capabilities and limits of modern AI tooling.

You'll be the lead for this area at RP and will report to the Principal Research Director, David Moss.

The role may be offered at a more junior or more senior level (and titled accordingly) depending on the successful candidate's experience

Hours and term: Our default is full-time on an initial 12-month contract with the possibility of extension. We're open to part-time for the right person, and open to a shorter initial term with the option to re-engage afterwards. Tell us what arrangement works for you.

Contact: Please email [email protected] if you have any questions.

What you'll do

  • Own RP's strategy for using AI in our work. Propose and prioritise where to invest, set the direction, and be the directly responsible individual for how AI is used across the organisation.
  • Design and run rigorous, decision-relevant evaluations. Test AI tools and workflows against the work we actually do, measuring real effects on quality, speed, and reliability,  not just adoption or self-reported time savings. Distinguish clearly what AI can be trusted to do from what it can't.
  • Build and prototype. Get hands-on with agentic tooling (e.g. Claude Code), plugins, MCP integrations, and lightweight internal tools — first to test approaches, then to scale the ones that work.
  • Partner with teams across RP. Sit with researchers and operational staff to understand their workflows in detail, surface high-value use cases, and embed what works into day-to-day practice.
  • Turn findings into guidance. Translate evaluation results into clear, current advice, policy, and training, and raise the organisation's overall AI fluency.
  • Assess safety and security of AI tools. Identify risks from AI tool use, including cybersecurity, data protection and legal compliance, and document clear recommendations for handling them.
  • Stay ahead of a fast-moving field and keep RP's approach evidence-led rather than hype-led.

Who we're looking for

This role sits at the intersection of research and engineering, so we're looking for genuine strength in both of the following — though, as noted below, the balance can tilt in either direction.

Research judgment. You understand what rigorous research looks like, how that differs across domains, and why a slick-looking AI output can still be wrong in ways that matter. You can design fair, decision-relevant tests and change your mind based on the results.

Technical fluency. You're genuinely hands-on with modern AI tooling, comfortable working with agentic coding tools like Claude Code, building plugins and MCP integrations, and writing the scripts needed to wring real capability out of these systems and to evaluate them properly.

We'd also expect:
  • A self-directed, experimental disposition, happy owning an ambiguous, fast-evolving mandate without a playbook.
  • Familiarity with effective-altruism-style research and RP's priorities to judge where AI genuinely helps.
  • Comfort working in a fully remote, globally distributed senior role.

We expect most candidates to lean one of two ways, and we're open to both:
  • A researcher who's fluent in AI — someone with a solid research background in cause prioritization research who has gone deep on AI tooling.
  • A technically strong builder with EA literacy — someone with strong engineering and AI-tooling skills who is engaged with the cause prioritization research space.
If you're strong on one axis and credible on the other, we want to hear from you.

  • Prior experience in AI enablement, evaluation, or applied AI/ML.
  • A software engineering background or a track record of building internal tools.
  • Direct experience with one or more of RP's research domains (animal welfare, AI safety and strategy, global health and wellbeing, and general cause prioritization).

What We Offer

Compensation
  • We offer an annual salary between $132,986-$146,447 USD pre-tax for a full-time position, prorated for part-time work.
  • The exact salary will be based on the candidate’s prior relevant experience and corresponding title level, and calculated using RP’s salary algorithm.
  • Compensation is not restricted to the currencies listed above.
  • To ensure fairness across the entire organization, RP does not negotiate salaries.
Other Benefits
  • Opportunity to contribute to a fast-growing, high-impact organization — our research is used by key decision-makers who influence the distribution of hundreds of millions of charitable dollars.
  • Remote-first environment, including flexible work hours and schedule.
  • Comprehensive global benefits program, including statutory benefits specific to a local country, as mandated by local law, and supplemental benefits, as available
  • Generous paid time off (PTO) and unpaid leave, including:
    • Statutory paid and unpaid leave (as applicable)
    • Unlimited (within reason) personal and sick paid and unpaid leave
    • “Mandated” mid- and end-year, organization-wide breaks (if the temporary employment contract falls within the break timeline)
    • Other paid and unpaid leave (e.g., bereavement)
  • Annual technology stipend of the equivalent of $500 USD that can be used to cover costs of purchasing work and office equipment
  • Learning opportunities, including workshops / training sessions
  • Virtual co-working spaces, including a private Rethink Priorities Focusmate group
  • RP Peer Support Program for New Employees.
  • Other benefits at the discretion of RP Leadership.
  • A caring team that values respectful work relations and a healthy work-life balance.
  • Opportunities to grow/advance your career and engage in professional development.
  • Low administrative bureaucracy.
  • We don’t provide snacks, but we could mail you a box of Oreos if you want!

Stage 1 — Initial Screening.
To be considered for this role, we ask for the following, which you can complete on the application page:
  1. A C.V.
    1. We recommend you update your CV to include all prior relevant roles and work as CV’s will be evaluated for this role.
  2. A cover letter briefly describing your suitability for the role
    1. In particular, we'd like to hear about your strengths on the two axes described above: your hands-on experience with AI tooling (whether deploying it across an organisation, in research or operations workflows, or in your own work), and your research background, especially where it relates to RP's domains. As noted, we expect most candidates to lean one way — tell us which, and what makes you credible on the other. Bullet points are welcome.
  3. Links to any relevant prior work you think would showcase your suitability
  4. No more than 1000 words addressing the following question:
    1. Rethink Priorities works across a variety of domains (AI, animal welfare, global health, cross-cause prioritisation), and methodologies (drawing on empirical literature, quantitative modeling, and philosophical theorising). With reference to some concrete research task conducted by Rethink Priorities, outline how you would evaluate the extent to which AI can be used to complete this task.
    2. Please see the application page for detailed instructions.
Stage 2 — Paid Skills Assessment.
  • You will complete a standardized, time-boxed task that mimics the actual job (3–5 hours)
  • You’ll be paid $45 per hour for the test task
Stage 3 — Interview
  • We will ask you questions across the skills and experience the role requires
  • You will have a chance to ask questions about the role, and RP broadly
Stage 4 — Reference Checks. We ask two references about your work

We hope to hire for this role by end of September.

  • Work Environment and Visa Sponsorship: This role is fully remote and we are able to legally hire in many countries. We are not able to sponsor visas for this role.
  • Time Zones and Working Hours: While we welcome applicants from all time zones, you may be expected to attend meetings with at least a two-hour overlap with UTC+2 working hours.
  • Language: Professional level of English language is required for all roles at Rethink Priorities.

We generally cannot accommodate extension requests made after the application deadline, or are longer than 3 days, and cannot accept late submissions to ensure fairness to other applicants.
  • Application materials: All application materials must be submitted in English language; otherwise, we will not be able to evaluate your candidacy.
