How We Serve
The Neighborhood and Business Safety (Code Enforcement) Division encompasses three functions: Code Enforcement, Business Licensing and Permits, and Animal Care and Control. The Division's primary goal is to maintain the City's unique urban balance with emphasis on neighborhood livability by recognizing diverse and competing interests and working to find balance and provide collaborative public safety by promoting traditional and non-traditional approaches.

What You'll Contribute
The Neighborhood and Business Safety Division is looking for a Code Enforcement Officer who is committed to fostering a safe, well-maintained, and welcoming community. We’re seeking someone who can balance education with enforcement - knowing when education and voluntary compliance will achieve the best outcome, and when formal action is necessary.  In this role, you’ll collaborate with businesses, property owners, and residents to promote compliance, share expertise, and uphold the standards that keep our city a premier destination to live, work, and visit.

As a Code Enforcement Officer, you will independently carry out complex technical duties related to municipal code compliance and business license regulation. Typical duties include responding to reports of potential violations, conducting field investigations, informing property or business owners of violations and required corrections, and providing clear explanations of relevant codes. You may be responsible for monitoring special events, collaborating with law enforcement during nighttime investigations, engaging with high-profile individuals, and preparing detailed case materials for potential prosecution.

The City’s Code Enforcement team operates seven days a week and provides service to the community from 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. This position will regularly require working late-night and early-morning hours, with shifts that extend until 4 a.m. The schedule also requires flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and major City events such as WeHo Pride or West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval. Please note: a 10% increase in hourly pay is assigned to all hours worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and holiday pay is paid at one-and-one-half (1 ½) times the hourly rate of pay.

The ideal candidate brings:

• Experience in public sector code enforcement.
• A service-oriented approach, emphasizing education, collaboration, and positive community interactions.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust with diverse stakeholders.
• Effective conflict resolution skills and the professionalism to manage challenging situations calmly and constructively.
• A background in investigating and resolving complex compliance issues.
• Experience preparing and presenting cases involving misdemeanors, administrative citations, or civil actions.
• Clear writing skills for inspection reports and responses to community inquiries.
• Penal Code 832 Certification (Must obtain within 6 months of hire).
• Code Enforcement Officer Certification (desirable).
• Fluency in Spanish or Russian (preferred).
• Possession of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree (preferred).

Reports to: Code Enforcement Supervisor

• High school diploma or GED; and,
• One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or,
• Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

• Penal Code 832 (Must obtain within 6 months of hire.)
• Valid California Driver's License
• Code Enforcement Officer Certification (desirable)
