Job Description Summary

A specialized nursing professional who focuses on the care and treatment of patients with heart diseases and conditions. The cardiology night shift nurse (RN) is responsible for assisting Cardiologist in providing access to cardiology services after regular hours.


Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Assist cardiologist with patient rounds, organize patient data for more efficient access, and obtain any information needed or requested.
  • Answer after hour calls/pages from hospital staff related to patients with cardiology service needs (i.e. current hospital cardiology census, new admits, consults, etc.).
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs, ensuring their well-being throughout the night and on weekends
  • Use the Electronic Medical record in accurately documenting patient information to insure the quality of patient care.
  • Manage all information obtained with strict confidentiality to safeguard patient information from use by unauthorized personnel.
  • Follow appropriate orders outlined by the cardiologist while updating the physician of any changes requiring use of the appropriate orders. 
  • Evaluate and triage in-house consults and communicate the timing of all consults with the cardiologist per the consulting MD’s request (i.e. STAT, routine, next day, etc.).
  • Prepare hand-off reports for the cardiologist relevant to the patient’s care, status change, or problems experienced that occurred after hours and on weekends.
  • Applies effective interviewing skills to obtain information from the patient and/or family and organize patient data (i.e. testing and procedure results) to assist the physician in making care decisions.
  • Ensure use of approved order sets are implemented for any planned procedure or test.
  • Interview cardiac patients and obtain information regarding patient health history on attended and consulted patients.
  • Assist area physicians, hospitals, clinics, and emergency departments in obtaining cardiology services after regular hours, and assist with facilitating patient transfer from area hospitals to Southeast Health after the cardiologist has accepted.
  • Provide emotional support while educating patients and families about procedures, treatments, lifestyle changes and heart health management.
  • Performs other duties as requested by primary manager that do not compromise moral code of conduct or protocols set in place for patient or employee safety

Qualifications

Minimum Education Required

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing  
  • Unencumbered RN license in the State of Alabama

Minimum Education Preferred

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree

Minimum Experience Required

  • Three (3) years’ experience as a registered nurse (RN)
  • One (1) year cardiology nursing experience

Required Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

  • Maintain current state RN license;
  • Successful completion of the following certifications and maintain current:
  • Advance Life Support (ACLS);
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates sound clinical judgment and critical thinking in all aspects of the nursing process and unit activities; develops creative solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patient population served.   Interprets data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provides appropriate care based on these needs.
  • Demonstrates appropriate utilization of the skills of the Registered Nurse as approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized, and function appropriately under stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform all exams in the department; has taken the initiative to insure one’s own competency with each exam.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with patients, families, visitors, and co-workers regardless of race, gender, disease process, life-style, religious or cultural beliefs.
  • Basic typing and computer skills.
  • Demonstrates job related skills in a safe, appropriate, effective, and timely manner.
  • Respect and caring demonstrated in words, actions, and body language to all patients and hospital staff.
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively within and between departments to provide quality service to patients.
  • Manual dexterity;
  • Observational skills;
  • Critical thinking;
  • Proficient in the use of defibrillators.
  • Stays current on correct operation of medical devices and associated materials;
  • Experience in operating personal computers, including operation of computer software in a Windows environment;
  • Ability to operate business machines to include fax and copier;
