Job Description Summary

About GE HealthCare
At GE HealthCare, we are creating technology that helps clinicians diagnose, treat, and monitor patients around the world. Our Florence, South Carolina site manufactures GE HealthCare's SIGNA MRI systems, which rely on advanced superconducting magnet technology to deliver high-quality imaging for millions of patients globally.

As a Cryogenic Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, development, and support of cryogenic systems and components that are critical to MRI performance and reliability. This is an opportunity to work on highly specialized engineering challenges while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across product development, manufacturing, and service.

Job Description

Role Overview

We are seeking an engineer with experience in cryogenic systems, thermal analysis, and hardware design to help lead the development and continuous improvement of superconducting magnet technologies used in MRI systems. This role combines hands-on engineering, analytical problem solving, design ownership, and cross-functional collaboration to support both new product development and our installed base of MRI systems worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze cryogenic components and systems used in superconducting MRI magnets
  • Perform thermal and heat transfer analyses, including heat load calculations, heat budgets, and verification testing
  • Support the thermal and structural design of cryogenic hardware and assemblies
  • Develop, execute, and document verification and validation activities for cryogenic components and instrumentation
  • Analyze reliability and performance of cryogenic systems and components
  • Support manufacturing and production teams with cryogenic and vacuum system expertise
  • Drive initiatives to reduce cryogen consumption and improve system efficiency
  • Investigate and resolve cryogenic, thermal, and vacuum-related issues impacting fielded MRI systems
  • Conduct failure analyses and implement corrective actions
  • Develop service tools and processes that support cryogen filling, maintenance, and safety
  • Analyze installed base performance data to identify trends and drive product improvements
  • Prepare and present technical analyses, design reviews, and engineering reports
  • Develop component specifications, test plans, and supplier requirements
  • Lead engineering productivity projects focused on product cost and lifecycle cost reduction

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, OR equivalent combination of education and relevant engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience working with cryogenic systems or cryogenic components
  • Experience designing, analyzing, or testing cryogenic systems, thermal systems, or liquid helium-based equipment
  • Understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and thermal system behavior
  • Experience supporting hardware development, design validation, or product engineering activities

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Thermal Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with cryocooler technologies, including Gifford-McMahon refrigeration systems
  • Experience supporting superconducting magnet, MRI, aerospace, quantum computing, semiconductor, or other cryogenic applications
  • Experience with high-vacuum systems, cryopumps, getters, and helium leak testing
  • Experience with liquid helium and liquid nitrogen transfer systems
  • Familiarity with cryogenic instrumentation and data acquisition systems
  • Experience evaluating material performance and machine design at cryogenic temperatures
  • Exposure to cryogenic component manufacturing environments
  • Experience using ANSYS, FEA, CFD, or related simulation tools

What Will Help You Succeed

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to translate complex technical challenges into practical engineering solutions
  • Comfortable working in both hands-on laboratory and manufacturing environments
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across engineering, manufacturing, and service teams
  • Continuous improvement mindset with a focus on reliability, quality, and cost optimization

Why Join GE HealthCare?

You'll have the opportunity to work on highly specialized technologies that directly influence patient care around the world. Our Florence team combines deep technical expertise with a collaborative culture, giving engineers the chance to solve complex challenges, drive innovation, and make a meaningful impact on the future of MRI technology.
