Job Summary
The Food Service Associate performs a variety of essential food service duties in one or more hospital food service environments, including food preparation, meal and beverage service, serving line operations, stocking, and maintaining clean and safe work areas. This role supports the daily operations of the Food and Nutrition Services department and helps ensure patients, visitors, and staff receive high-quality food and exceptional service in a safe, welcoming environment.The ideal candidate is dependable, team-oriented, and committed to providing excellent customer service. Essential Functions
Sets up food service, kitchen, serving, or salad preparation areas, equipment, and utensils in accordance with established procedures and daily operational needs.
Checks and records food temperatures as required to ensure compliance with food safety and quality standards.
Prepares work areas and equipment for daily operations and may operate cooking, baking, or other food service equipment as assigned and appropriately trained.
Transports food, beverages, supplies, and equipment from the main kitchen, bakery, salad preparation area, or other designated locations to serving areas by carrying materials or using a motorized cart.
Sets up and maintains hot and cold food service lines according to established procedures, including steam tables, ice cream, yogurt, and ice machines.
Selects and uses appropriate utensils and equipment and ensures steam lines and serving equipment are maintained at proper temperatures for menu items.
Prepares or assists with the preparation of a variety of hot and cold food items, including meats, vegetables, beverages, salads, sandwiches, pie fillings, simple bakery items, salad dressings, and other menu items, as assigned.
Serves food and beverages to customers from counters, serving lines, and steam tables while following established procedures and ensuring accurate portion sizes and presentation.
Adds relishes, garnishes, condiments, and other accompaniments according to menu specifications and customer needs.
Replenishes food, beverages, silverware, glassware, dishes, trays, condiments, and other supplies at serving stations to ensure continuous and efficient service.
Provides friendly, professional, and responsive customer service to patients, visitors, employees, and other customers.
Responds to day-to-day operational needs and promptly reports equipment issues, supply shortages, food quality concerns, or other unusual conditions to the appropriate team member or supervisor.
Identifies and removes spoiled, damaged, or unattractive food and defective supplies or equipment in accordance with established food safety and department procedures.
Maintains clean, organized, and sanitary work areas in compliance with food safety, infection prevention, and departmental standards.
Cleans and sanitizes work areas, floors, facilities, pots, pans, serviceware, utensils, and equipment as appropriate to the assigned area.
Collects and disposes of garbage and trash in designated containers and follows established procedures for waste removal and disposal.
Works collaboratively with coworkers, supervisors, and other members of the
Food and Nutrition Services team to support efficient daily operations.
Follows all applicable hospital, departmental, food safety, sanitation, infection prevention, and workplace safety policies and procedures.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
Experience
Food service experience 2-3 years required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
- Knowledge of food service lines set-up and temperature requirements.
- Skill in cooking and preparing a variety of foods.
- Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards.
