Job Description

About Thermo Fisher Scientific

As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you will do meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every day: enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.

We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, from protecting the environment and ensuring food safety to advancing research that helps find cures for cancer.

You will join a collaborative environment where scientific curiosity is encouraged, innovation is expected, and your work can directly influence products used worldwide.

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Staff Scientist to serve as a scientific leader and technical expert within our Cell Biology Research & Development team.

In this role, you will help shape the long-term evolution of our flow cytometry reagent technologies by defining scientific strategies, guiding technical decisions, and translating scientific insight into innovative products that address customer needs across diverse application areas.

This is an opportunity to influence the future of flow cytometry technologies by leading new product development, advancing existing platforms, and solving complex scientific challenges that directly impact customers around the world.

You will have the autonomy to define scientific strategies, design innovative experiments, and take ownership of key scientific and technical decisions across multidisciplinary projects. Your work will influence technology development from concept through implementation.

Working closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Technical Operations, Product Management, and Global R&D teams, you will help transform scientific discoveries into robust, scalable products. Beyond your technical expertise, you will play a key role in mentoring colleagues, promoting scientific excellence, and strengthening the technical capabilities of the broader organization.

If you are enthusiastic about applying scientific expertise and strategic thinking to solve meaningful problems — and enjoy seeing your ideas become real products — this is the opportunity for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Product Development: Lead complex scientific projects from concept through implementation, serving as the R&D representative on cross-functional new product development programs and driving technical activities to meet project milestones, timelines, and product objectives.
  • Technical Problem Solving and Decision Support: Translate experimental results into clear technical recommendations, present findings and project updates to stakeholders and senior leadership, and resolve product, assay, reagent, and process-related issues through root-cause analysis and effective corrective actions.
  • Innovation and Technology Advancement: Maintain deep knowledge of relevant scientific fields, the competitive landscape, and emerging technology trends to identify opportunities for innovation, platform advancement, and continuous improvement across products and processes.
  • Customer and Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with technical teams, cross-functional stakeholders, and business partners to communicate scientific insights, align technical direction, and support informed product and project decisions.
  • Team Leadership and Mentorship: Mentor scientists and technical colleagues in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific problem-solving best practices while fostering scientific rigor, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Skills and Competencies

  • Flow Cytometry Expertise: Strong hands-on experience in flow cytometry, including sample preparation, primary immune cell culture, functional assays, immunophenotyping, multiplex and spectral panel design, intracellular and extracellular multicolor staining, compensation, gating strategies, and analysis using software such as FlowJo.
  • Primary Cell Processing and Assay Development: Experience processing tissue, isolating cells such as human PBMCs and mouse splenocytes, and preparing and culturing human and mouse primary immune cells for assay development and optimization.
  • Experimental Design and Data Interpretation: Proven expertise in experimental design, method development, statistical analysis, scientific data interpretation, and development of reproducible workflows and standard operating procedures.
  • Scientific Innovation and Business Acumen: Ability to conduct literature reviews, assess competitive and technology trends, identify unmet customer and market needs, and translate scientific opportunities into product-relevant concepts and business value.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience collaborating across multidisciplinary, cross-functional, and international teams to align scientific work with project priorities and business objectives.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Demonstrated ability to work independently, lead scientific projects, influence technology and product development, and mentor or coach scientists and technical colleagues.
  • Digital and Data-Driven Research Capabilities: Strong digital literacy with experience using scientific software, modern data analysis tools, automation, AI-assisted technologies, and digital platforms to accelerate research and support data-driven decision-making.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Immunology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field with 3+ years of postdoctoral or industrial R&D experience.
  • Experience in pharma, biotech, cell therapy, or gene therapy markets is desired.
