The Registered Nurse - Surgical Services provides comprehensive nursing care to patients throughout the surgical continuum, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Working under general supervision, the Registered Nurse - Surgical Services collaborates with physicians, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
This role includes responsibilities in both the Operating Room (OR) and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), providing care and support before, during, and after surgical procedures. The Registered Nurse - Surgical Services will:
- Coordinate and deliver individualized nursing care based on established nursing standards and scientific principles.
- Collaborate with all members of the healthcare team to provide exceptional patient care throughout the surgical experience.
- Serve as a communication liaison between patients, families, and the surgical team.
- Educate patients and families during all phases of care.
- Prepare operating rooms and equipment for procedures.
- Monitor patient safety and identify actual or potential risks, taking appropriate action when necessary.
- Assess and monitor patients' physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations and rapidly changing patient conditions.
- Accurately document patient care, treatments, and outcomes in the electronic medical record.
- Assist with inventory management and charge capture for supplies utilized during procedures.
- Float to various clinical areas as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Operating Room Responsibilities
Circulating Nurse
- Assist with patient positioning and ensure patient comfort and safety.
- Maintain accurate handling and documentation of specimens.
- Observe and enforce strict aseptic techniques.
- Monitor and verify proper operation of surgical equipment.
- Perform pre- and post-procedure counts of surgical items.
Scrub Nurse
- Select, prepare, and handle surgical instruments and supplies.
- Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
- Perform surgical counts in collaboration with the Circulating Registered Nurse.
Job Requirements:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- ADN, Diploma, BSN, or MSN accepted
- Current Wisconsin Registered Nurse license, compact nursing license, or temporary permit. Nurses utilizing a compact license must initiate Wisconsin licensure within 30 days of employment.
- CPR certification within three months of hire.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients across the lifespan, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
