The Opportunity

Contra Costa Water District is seeking a skilled and motivated Utility Worker - Canal to join our Operations & Maintenance team. In this hands-on field role, you'll apply water system principles to help ensure reliable water service throughout the community. You'll join a team that enjoys solving problems, maintaining an open waterway, and learning new skills along the way.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Install, maintain, and repair equipment at the Contra Costa Canal and other facilities.
  • Assist with grounds and open space maintenance. 
  • Perform excavation, backfilling, riprap placement, erosion repair along canal banks and drainage ditches. 
  • Operate a variety of power tools and other equipment required in field operations. 
  • Follow and adhere to all safety procedures, regulations, and protocols.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

TrainingEquivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. 

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in utility and/or public works-related maintenance and construction work.

Licenses and Certifications:   Possession of a valid California driver’s license to be maintained throughout employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb and descend ladders; to operate various equipment and tools; to operate a motor vehicle and visit various District sites; and vision to read printed materials and a computer. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas. Finger dexterity is needed to operate and repair tools and equipment. Employees must possess the ability to carry, push, pull, and lift materials and objects weighing up to 90 pounds with the use of proper equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS 
Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, dust, and air contaminants. Employees may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.  

WORKING CONDITIONS 
Employees may be required to work outside their Normal Workweek/Workday which may consist of evenings, weekends, and holidays.

BACKGROUND CHECK
Appointment to this classification is contingent upon successfully completing CCWD's pre-employment process. All positions require a criminal background check, verification of employment and education history, and professional reference checks. Depending on the job classification, additional requirements may include a pre-employment medical examination, drug and alcohol testing, and verification of prior drug and alcohol testing history as required by federal regulations.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All CCWD employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. As such, CCWD employees may be called upon to support the activities of CCWD during an emergency situation.
