Summary:
The Residence Maintenance Crew (RMC) is a team of student staff members who are tasked with supporting Housing and Residence Life’s Residential Operations Team. RMCs respond to 2FIX facilities requests concerning residence hall furniture, set-ups for events held in meeting spaces within the residence halls and generally work to improve the residential experience at American University. The RMC services all residence halls on the main campus, as well as Nebraska Hall and The Frequency Apartments.
Essential Functions:
1.) General Duties
Assist Facilities Specialists in responding to 2fix requests, receive coordination from Specialists, and follow up directly when work has been completed.
Add, remove, and replace furniture in the residents’ rooms.
Inspect facilities for damage or safety issues, report and address immediately.
Track lounge furniture inventory and consult supervisors about replacements as needed.
Install and remove lofts each semester.
Address “squeaky” bed issues (W-D 40).
Replace shelving pieces of all wooden furniture, unless it falls under Facilities Maintenance (Built-Ins, hanging bars).
Remove a hutch if it is broken (FM manages hutch lighting issues).
Replace and repair window shades and curtains.
Event set-ups of residence hall meeting spaces based on requests.
Oversee all aspects of appliance maintenance, including fixing, removing, or replacing components such as burners, drip trays, microwaves, stoves, refrigerators, and lights. This is done in consultation with supervisors.
Relocate items approved for recycling to the appropriate loading dock and communicate with 2FIX for pick-up.
Conduct building inspections of an assigned residence hall and submit 2FIX requests for FM completion.
Conduct monthly inventory checks and update spreadsheets after confirmation by supervisors.
Other duties as assigned, up to and including coverage of the HRL front desk.
2.) Fall Duties
Daily response to work tickets in coordination with Facilities Specialists.
Stage loft pieces.
Building Walkthrough’s.
Event Setups.
Moving Cart/Bin Management.
Assist in semester move-in.
3.) Spring Duties
Daily response to work tickets in coordination with Facilities Specialists.
Storage Itemization in preparation for Summer Turnover.
Building Walkthrough’s.
Event Setups.
Bin/Cart Management.
Assist with Spring storage renovations.
Catalog what items need to be discarded at end of semester.
On-site support for HRL events.
Enforcing Housing rules for end of semester move out.
4.) Summer Duties
Daily response to work tickets in coordination with Facilities Specialists.
Delofting from Spring (May completed by June).
Cart/Bin Management post move out and storage for summer.
XL bed installations.
Student Staff Yearly Training.
Assist with Summer uniformization.
Confirm inventory matches records on file.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Part-time.
10 - 20 hours per week.
Salary Range:
$18.40 per hour.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
Operational Hours: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with additional opportunities for hours 5:00 - 8:00 pm.
2 - 3 Student staff members to be recruited per semester, including summers (see below outline of semesterly/monthly duties).
The RMC is intended to be an extra layer of assistance to the Facilities Specialist. Ideally, 1 RMC is scheduled on shift up to the max hours per week, with both being scheduled during peak season and special projects.
Break periods to align with professional staff/Operations Calendars.
