Diesel Mechanic
Location: Wadeville, Gauteng
Department: Operations
Employment Type: Permanent
We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Diesel Mechanic to join an established operations team in Wadeville.
The successful candidate will be responsible for preventative maintenance, fault-finding, diagnostics and repairs on diesel engines, heavy-duty vehicles and plant equipment. The role requires strong mechanical expertise, a high standard of workmanship and the ability to respond to breakdowns and perform field services when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance on diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment
- Conduct fault-finding, diagnostics and repairs on diesel engines and mechanical systems
- Maintain and repair transmissions, clutches and gearboxes, including manual and automatic systems
- Diagnose and repair steering and suspension systems
- Maintain and repair pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Maintain hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders and hydraulic lines
- Inspect, maintain and repair air brake and pneumatic systems
- Maintain and repair drivetrains, differentials, axles and prop shafts
- Identify mechanical problems and implement effective and timely repairs
- Conduct inspections in line with required procedures and checklists
- Maintain detailed service records, job cards and maintenance schedules
- Maintain parts and inventory records
- Adhere to all safety rules, standard operating procedures and safe workshop practices
- Interpret technical manuals, mechanical drawings and diagnostic information
- Minimise equipment breakdowns and downtime through effective preventative maintenance
- Attend to breakdowns and perform field services when required
- Work after hours and participate in standby duties when required
- Communicate effectively with team members and relevant stakeholders
- Maintain a high standard of workmanship across all maintenance activities
Minimum Requirements
- Matric / Grade 12
- Ability to read and write in English and Afrikaans
- Trade-tested Diesel Mechanic with a Red Seal qualification
- Minimum 5 years' post-qualification experience
- Own tools required; special tools will be provided
- EC driver's licence will be advantageous but is not mandatory
Technical Experience
- Extensive experience maintaining, servicing, fault-finding and repairing diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, including diagnostics, overhauling, servicing and repairs
- Experience with manual and automatic transmissions, clutches and gearboxes
- Experience diagnosing and repairing steering and suspension systems
- Strong knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems on self-propelled vehicles
- Practical experience with hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders and hydraulic lines
- Knowledge and practical experience with air brake systems and pneumatic systems
- Experience with drivetrains, differentials, axles and prop shafts
- Experience conducting preventative and scheduled maintenance
- Plant and construction vehicle experience
- Experience working on heavy-duty vehicles, plant and construction equipment will be advantageous
- Asphalt industry experience
- Bitumen and road industry experience
- Strong understanding of health and safety requirements and workshop practices
- Good record-keeping skills, including maintenance reports, job cards and service records
