Forge & Build is hiring a Yard Project Manager at our rental facility in Ashland, MO, and we’re looking for someone who’s ready to grow with us, bring energy and drive to their work, and help us build the future of construction. The Yard Project Manager is a strategic leadership role responsible for directing multi-state yard projects and standardizing daily operational processes across various locations. This position oversees forecasting, procurement, budgeting, and the execution of new store openings and major remodels, ensuring rigorous safety standards throughout. Key responsibilities include training teams on yard organization, developing operational flow plans, and leading inventory and supply chain management. By optimizing shipping, receiving, and transfer processes, the Yard Project Manager collaborates with Store and Yard Managers to reduce invalid orders and minimize freight expenses. This role is essential for driving innovation and operational excellence within the growing Forge and Build business model.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and offers overtime pay after working 40 hours. (This role is subject to on-call scheduling with additional compensation provided)

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage the yard, set up operational processes and procedures for new store openings (unloading, stocking, equipment) and lead special projects (remodels, infrastructure.) 
  • Responsible for implementing process and procedures with all yard teams to meet daily goals including training team on current stocking, organizing standards and best practices. 
  • Implement yard standards through maintaining a safe, organized, and hazard-free yard environment; including execution of routine inspections, repairs, maintenance, and equipment cleaning. 
  • Identify and communicate to upper management yard necessities and equipment that needs to be upgraded or phased out. 
  • Oversee loading and unloading processes and procedures of building materials while strictly maintaining safety standards, and ensuring safety requirements are completed. 
  • Assist in developing and implementing department flow plans for current and new stores.
  • Identify, develop, and implement methodologies to continually improve store and yard processes, efficiencies and procedures
  • Develop strong working partnerships with Store Managers and field teams.
  • Serve as an advocate for company culture and high standards of customer experience. 
  • Effectively communicate any issues, delays, or concerns to ensure productive execution of all yard projects. 
  • Implementation of yard operational setup, processes, procedures, updating best yard practices across multiple sites including new, existing and acquired locations.
  • Act as the primary contact for yard supervisors to provide data and insights for improvement at all levels. 
  • Ensure all receiving, loading and return processes are in place to create accurate order delivery in a timely manner, and general yard/building standards are maintained in accordance with company standards. 
  • Identify potential issues (e.g., out-of-stock, non stocking opportunities) and proactively communicate action plans and regular updates to managers until resolved. 
  • Effectively communicates new procedures , processes and changes relating to yard management to store teams.
  • Help identify new efficiencies that help individual and Distribution Center yards. 
  • Other administrative and operational tasks as needed.

Skills & Qualifications 

  • Ability to manage projects to ensure accurate and on-time completion while adhering to a given budget. 
  • Proven ability to lead, train, direct, motivate, and manage others, including driving company culture. 
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment and vehicles in the yard. 
  • Intermediate proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets. 
  • Effective time management  abilities through leading multiple yard projects at any given time across multiple states. 
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively changes and processes across multiple projects at any given time
  • Ability to effectively lead projects across multiple states including execution and results driven timelines
  • Strong organizational, planning, and team-building skills. 
  • Ability to comprehend, execute, and enforce company programs, policies, procedures, and safety regulations/guidelines. 
  • Ability to travel a minimum of 75% of the time and work weekends as needed; availability for overnight travel. 
  • Valid driver's license (minimum Class A). 
  • Self-starter with a mindset of continuously improving store and yard operations; detail-oriented with the ability to proactively solve problems. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. 
  • High energy, a high sense of urgency, and strong attention to detail. 
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information. 
  • Provides and delivers excellent customer experience. 
  • Desire and ability to quickly learn other analytical tools, technologies, and systems.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required; a four-year college degree is preferred. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of Management/Leadership experience or equivalent. 
  • Fundamental working knowledge of Bistrack preferred
  • Experience with hardware and building products in a retail/yard environment required
  • Extensive hardline and building materials product knowledge. 
  • General knowledge of the construction industry required
  • Experience with strategic and visionary leadership mindset with building out business models for future growth. 
  • Experience providing excellent customer service; solid written and oral communication skills. 
  • Understanding of basic math for calculating quantities and ensuring accurate inventory counts. 
  • Procurement experience is preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods of time, including on varying or uneven surfaces. 
  • Ability to move products and assist with layout changes (must be able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly; occasionally up to 100 lbs or more). 
  • Ability to operate yard equipment.
  • Ability to be outside during extreme and varying weather conditions and temperatures. 
  • Ability to work in various environments and conditions including tight and confined spaces, requiring bending and stooping on a regular basis.
  • Ability to operate and use  tools and equipment with precision, including repetitive motions such as gripping, twisting, and turning. 
  • Ability to safely operate machinery including reading technical manuals/drawings, and communicating with colleagues and customers. 
  • Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection as required. 
  • Ability to travel by air or vehicle for frequent and prolonged periods of time. 
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity equipment.
