POSITION: Maintenance & Repair Technician for Sow Farm
ACCOUNTABILITY: Sow Farm Manager
STATUS: Nonexempt
POSITION OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Maintenance Technician is to provide general maintenance and construction support to the sow farm facility, including but not limited to areas of plumbing, welding, carpentry, painting, electrical and machine and vehicle servicing, remodeling and assigned new construction projects. Incumbent will also support in the breeding department every third weekend.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Specifically, the Maintenance Technician is responsible for the following activities:
- Maintain, repair and rebuild various production mechanisms and equipment to ensure effective operation, including but not limited to loading chutes, crates, gates, ventilation system components, curtains, power washers, feed and water systems
- Provide general maintenance and upkeep to prevent deterioration, including but not limited to building partitions, making wall repairs, fixing roofs, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, concrete repairs and other parts of building structures
- Perform general, preventative maintenance service and repairs on air-conditioning and heating systems
- Provide general plumbing repair and installation
- Provide minor electrical repair and installation
- Ensure the proper planning and completion of new construction, minor remodeling and ad hoc projects as assigned
- Ensure proper & timely Company documentation & record keeping requirements are being met.
- Develop and maintain knowledge in the procedures and safety measures in the areas of plumbing, welding, carpentry, painting, machine servicing, electrical and/or vehicle servicing
- Coordinate and work with the manager on obtaining necessary parts and supplies, procuring assistance with escalated projects, etc.
- Advocate and engage in SFI's animal welfare policy, including promoting animal well-being, remedying circumstances which impede animal care, and properly reporting instances of mistreatment or abuse
- Adhere to all Company vehicle policies
- Demonstrate, promote and adhere to all Company safety policies
- Be knowledgeable and adhere to all Company bio-security protocols
- As required, respond to emergencies after business hours
- Daily, weekly, and monthly filtration inspections
- Monitor and record pit levels
- General upkeep of filtration systems
- General upkeep of ventilation systems
- Conduct generator and alarm tests and log results
- Monitor ventilation systems on a daily basis and make any changes necessary
- Under the discretion of the manager, the maintenance technician may be required to fill in for other departments if the farm is short staffed
- Maintenance technician may be required to work in production on the weekends
- Perform the composting of dead animals
- Operate skid loader effectively

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:
Position may involve non-standard business hours in the event of emergency repairs. Incumbent may carry out several different tasks in a day, or at any number of locations, and may have to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects and work in uncomfortable, awkward or cramped positions, or on ladders.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Working knowledge of general mechanical skills, including general carpentry, welding, electrical, plumbing & concrete experience
- Strong communication and multi-tasking skills
- Previous plumbing, painting, machine servicing, electrical and/or vehicle servicing experience preferred, or a combination thereof
- Clean driving record
