CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Background: Applicants must successfully pass a background check that may include a polygraph prior to appointment.
Availability: Incumbents may be required to work nights and weekends.
Body Art Policy: While on duty, employees shall not have visible body modifications or body art, including but not limited to tattoos, piercings, stretching, branding, beading or implantation, and scarification. All body art must be completely covered while on duty by clothing, a skin-colored patch no larger than three (3) inches by three (3) inches, or skin-colored cosmetic makeup.Travel: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.

Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D. or a U.S. Department of Education approved High School Equivalency Test.

| Option 1: Two (2) years of full-time work experience performing clerical and data entry functions in an office environment, public contact, customer service, eliciting personal information, interpreting mandates, policies, procedures and regulations. |
| Option 2: One (1) year of full-time work experience performing clerical and data entry functions in an office environment, public contact, customer service, to include eliciting personal information, and interpreting mandates, policies, procedures and regulations, in a Probation Department. |
| Option 3: Thirty (30) semester / forty-five (45) quarter units in psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice or other closely related behavioral science* -AND- One (1) year of full-time work experience, as listed in Option 1. |
| Option 4: Six (6) months of related volunteer work of full-time work in a Probation and/or Correctional environment -AND- One (1) year of full-time work experience, as listed in Option 1. |
*A list of coursework in a qualifying field or legible copies of transcripts from an accredited institution (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) must be submitted with the application if qualifying under option 3. For all International Degree's, applications MUST include an international degree equivalency report attached to the application.

NOTE: The Probation Assistant classification is not a natural progression into the Probation Officer series.
The ideal candidate will be highly organized, customer service driven individual with the ability to interpret and articulate rules, regulation, and procedures, demonstrating the ability to work with a diverse and demanding clientele, exhibiting confidentiality and professionalism to analyze situations and applying logic and rational thinking.
Examination: The selection process will consist of an online assessment followed by a competitive evaluation of qualifications. The online assessment will measure the knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Office Operations & Practices
- Public Contact
- Written Communication
- Using Technology
