Paralegal II (Litigation Support – Affirmative Civil Enforcement)

Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Client: United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Western District of Michigan (WDMI)
Division: Civil Division – Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE)
Work Schedule: Full-Time | Monday–Friday | 40 Hours per Week
Travel: Occasional government-approved travel for litigation support and training may be required.

Position Overview

Crossroads Talent Solutions is seeking an experienced Paralegal II (Litigation Support) to support the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Western District of Michigan, within the Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) Division.

This position provides advanced litigation support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) handling complex civil litigation involving healthcare fraud, False Claims Act matters, Medicare and Medicaid fraud, Controlled Substances Act violations, civil rights enforcement, environmental litigation, and other federal civil enforcement actions.

The ideal candidate possesses strong litigation technology experience, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to manage large volumes of electronic evidence throughout all phases of litigation while maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

The Paralegal II will provide comprehensive litigation support services, including but not limited to:

Litigation Support

  • Assist AUSAs throughout all phases of federal civil litigation.
  • Organize, review, analyze, and manage documentary evidence.
  • Maintain litigation files and ensure accurate organization of case materials.
  • Support investigations involving healthcare fraud, government fraud, civil rights, environmental enforcement, and other affirmative civil matters.
  • Prepare litigation materials for hearings, depositions, settlement negotiations, and trial.

Electronic Discovery (eDiscovery)

  • Collect, process, organize, index, and produce electronically stored information (ESI).
  • Load, manage, and maintain electronic document review databases.
  • Create and administer document review workspaces.
  • Perform electronic document processing and quality control.
  • Monitor litigation hold compliance.
  • Generate reports tracking electronic discovery processing and productions.
  • Draft and review technical production specifications and discovery responses.

Litigation Technology

  • Utilize DOJ-approved litigation support software.
  • Create and maintain databases for document management.
  • Process electronic evidence for attorney review.
  • Extract file metadata and create electronic file images.
  • Support automated litigation support systems and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Recommend software solutions for document management and trial preparation.
  • Assist with technology-assisted document review.

Trial Preparation

  • Prepare trial exhibits and demonstrative evidence.
  • Assist with courtroom technology.
  • Operate presentation software during hearings and trial.
  • Support witness preparation and exhibit organization.
  • Coordinate with forensic vendors and outside litigation support professionals.
  • Provide courtroom presentation support utilizing litigation technology.

Document Management

  • Organize and maintain large collections of electronic and paper records.
  • Ensure timely availability of litigation documents.
  • Review documents for completeness and quality.
  • Maintain document tracking logs and evidence inventories.
  • Ensure accurate indexing and retrieval of litigation materials.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with:
    • Assistant United States Attorneys
    • Automated Litigation Support (ALS) personnel
    • Federal law enforcement agencies
    • Civil Division staff
    • Outside counsel
    • Litigation vendors
  • Resolve technical issues involving document productions and electronic discovery.
  • Provide litigation technology assistance to Civil Division personnel.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should possess the following qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in:
    • Paralegal Studies
    • Legal Studies
    • Criminal Justice
    • Information Technology
    • Computer Science
    • Business Administration
    • Or a related discipline.
  • Equivalent professional litigation support experience may be considered.

Required Experience

  • Experience providing litigation support in a legal environment.
  • Experience managing electronic discovery (eDiscovery).
  • Experience reviewing, organizing, and maintaining legal documents and evidence.
  • Experience working with large volumes of electronic case data.
  • Experience supporting document productions during litigation.
  • Experience utilizing litigation support databases.
  • Experience maintaining confidential legal records.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.

Technical Qualifications

Candidates should demonstrate proficiency with:

  • Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in:

  • Federal civil litigation

  • Controlled Substances Act enforcement

Experience using the following software is highly desirable:

Experience supporting fraud investigations or federal litigation is strongly preferred.

Security Requirements

Applicants must be able to:

  • Successfully complete a DOJ background investigation.
  • Pass an FBI fingerprint and name check.
  • Complete required Public Trust screening.
  • Obtain and maintain all security credentials necessary to access USAO facilities and information systems.
  • Maintain strict compliance with Privacy Act requirements and confidentiality standards.
