Description
Software Engineer - Aviation Software Assurance (Journey Level)
Location: Patuxent River, MD
About the Opportunity
SITEC is seeking an experienced Journey-Level Software Engineer to support the H-1 Helicopter Program at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, MD.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with advanced aviation technology supporting the U.S. Marine Corps' UH-1Y Venom and AH-1Z Viper aircraft.
This is not a traditional software development position. Instead, you'll use your technical expertise to evaluate software designs, review source code, assess engineering processes, and ensure mission-critical systems meet rigorous performance, safety, and security standards.
If you enjoy solving complex technical challenges, working alongside industry experts, and seeing your work directly impact military aviation, this could be a great fit!
What You'll Do
-
Software Engineering Oversight: Review and evaluate software developed by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure quality, reliability, and compliance with technical requirements.
-
Code & Architecture Reviews: Analyze source code, software architecture, repositories, and engineering practices to identify potential risks and recommend improvements.
-
Software Testing & Validation: Evaluate software testing results, automated test processes, code coverage, and verification activities to ensure system readiness.
-
Technical Documentation: Review software engineering deliverables, including Software Development Plans (SDPs), Software Design Descriptions (SDDs), Software Version Descriptions (SVDs), and test reports.
-
Cybersecurity & Software Assurance: Assess secure coding practices, software vulnerabilities, static analysis results, and software security requirements.
-
Engineering Collaboration: Work closely with government stakeholders, contractors, OEMs, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve technical challenges.
-
Technical Risk Management: Evaluate proposed software changes, identify potential integration issues, and provide recommendations to improve system performance and reliability.
-
Program Support: Assist with modernization initiatives, technical reviews, project milestones, and engineering presentations.
What We're Looking For
-
Experience in software engineering, software assurance, systems engineering, or related technical disciplines.
-
Strong understanding of software development lifecycles, engineering methodologies, and software quality practices.
-
Ability to read, interpret, and evaluate source code in languages such as C, C++, Ada, Assembly, or Python.
-
Familiarity with software architecture, code reviews, debugging, and testing methodologies.
-
Experience with software verification and validation, including unit, integration, and regression testing.
-
Understanding of secure coding principles, vulnerability analysis, and software security best practices.
-
Familiarity with Agile development, DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing tools.
-
Strong analytical, technical documentation, and communication skills.
-
Ability to collaborate with engineering teams, contractors, and government customers.
Highly Desired Experience
-
Experience supporting DoD, Naval Aviation, NAVAIR, or other aerospace and defense programs.
-
Familiarity with embedded software, avionics, or safety-critical systems.
-
Experience reviewing contractor-developed software and technical deliverables (CDRLs).
-
Knowledge of Static Application Security Testing (SAST), Software Composition Analysis (SCA), and vulnerability management.
-
Familiarity with MISRA C/C++, SEI CERT C, or other secure coding standards.
-
Understanding of Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) and Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) standards.
-
Experience with software configuration management, version control, and technical baseline reviews.
Why This Opportunity Stands Out
-
Real-World Impact: Support software systems that directly contribute to Marine Corps aviation readiness and mission success.
-
Technical Variety: Work across software architecture, cybersecurity, testing, integration, and modernization.
-
Industry Collaboration: Engage with government engineering teams, major defense contractors, and leading aerospace manufacturers.
-
Professional Growth: Expand your expertise in aviation software assurance, embedded systems, and mission-critical technologies.
-
More Than Coding: Apply your software engineering knowledge to technical oversight, problem-solving, and engineering decision-making.
