Description
Note: This is a full-time ACC AmeriCorps position with the Boston Medical Center
About the American Connection Corps:
The American Connection Corps (ACC), an AmeriCorps program of Lead For America (LFA), is a service fellowship program aimed at helping communities build the digital connectivity necessary to expand opportunity and economic mobility, ranging from healthcare access to quality employment.
ACC Members serve with locally-rooted organizations, helping address the digital divide and strengthen access to opportunity. Through their service, they gain hands-on experience, build in-demand skills, and explore career pathways while making a tangible impact in their communities.
About the Boston Medical Center
Boston Medical Center’s mission is to provide exceptional, equitable, and accessible healthcare to all, particularly underserved and vulnerable populations, while advancing health equity through compassionate, patient-centered care, education, research, and community engagement.
Position Overview
The AmeriCorps Member will serve as a Patient Navigator within the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) Division at Boston Medical Center, helping improve access to fertility care for underserved communities. Under the supervision of clinical staff, the Member will provide nonclinical, staff-approved patient education, assist with appointment coordination, help patients overcome barriers to completing infertility evaluations, and connect patients with approved hospital and community resources. The Member will help establish and strengthen the patient navigation program, improving patient engagement and continuity of care. As the program develops, the Member may also support staff-led efforts to explore technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance navigation services and build long-term program capacity.
The Member will not provide medical advice, perform clinical duties, interpret test results, make clinical decisions, or provide abortion services or referrals for abortion services. All service activities will be consistent with the AmeriCorps-approved grant and applicable AmeriCorps requirements.
Key Responsibilities
The ACC Member will:
- Provide nonclinical patient navigation support and staff-approved education throughout the infertility evaluation process, using materials and guidance approved by clinical staff.
- Assist patients with appointment coordination, scheduling of tests recommended by the healthcare team, and overcoming barriers to care. The Member will not recommend tests, interpret results, or advise patients on treatment or clinical decisions.
- Connect patients with hospital and community resources approved for use by the program and facilitate communication with the healthcare team within the Member’s assigned role and established procedures.
- Support the development and refinement of patient navigation workflows and educational resources for review and approval by appropriate staff.
- Track patient engagement, barriers to care, and evaluation completion to support program assessment, using hospital-approved systems and procedures and accessing or recording only information authorized for the Member’s role. The Member will follow applicable patient confidentiality, privacy, and information-security requirements.
- Assist with staff-led exploration of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance navigation services. The Member will not independently select, approve, or deploy technology or enter patient-identifiable or protected health information into AI tools unless specifically authorized under hospital policies and approved procedures.
- Performance Goals: Support 50–75 patients, develop or refine educational resources and workflows, and contribute to quarterly and end-of-service program evaluations. Progress and completed activities will be documented in accordance with program procedures and reviewed by the Member’s supervisor.
All functions and activities performed by the AmeriCorps Member will be completed under the guidance, supervision, and direction of program and host site staff. Clinical staff will retain responsibility for all clinical decisions, medical advice, testing recommendations, and patient care. The Member’s service will supplement—not displace—paid employees or existing volunteers and will not duplicate services already available locally. All activities must comply with applicable AmeriCorps prohibited-activity requirements, including 45 CFR §§ 2520.65 and 2540.100, and the terms of the approved award.
