Description
In partnership with the Oxnard Union High School District, the City of Oxnard's Cultural and Community Services Department is seeking Oxnard Union High School students to join our internship program! The Sustainability, Prosperity, Education, Equity-Driven (S.P.E.E.D.) internship program is a nontraditional program designed to address overlapping community needs and provide students with professional skills and training.
Under general supervision, Interns provide on-site support for a variety of community programs and services within the Cultural and Community Services Department.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Intern classification allows the incumbent to develop journey-level knowledge and abilities. Initially under closer supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties related to recreational and human services programs and activities. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and may perform duties requiring a broader and more detailed understanding of recreation and human services program operations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
General supervision is provided by a Cultural and Recreation Analyst or higher-level recreation program personnel. An Intern may provide functional and technical supervision to subordinate recreation leaders or volunteers.
WORK SCHEDULE:
These positions work various schedules and at various locations throughout the city of Oxnard and Port Hueneme. These positions may be required to be available to work additional hours as needed to respond to workload needs. These positions are non-exempt under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a given workweek.
PLEASE NOTE:
Extra-Help positions are expected to last no more than 960 hours. Under the terms of the City's benefits plan and policies, this position is not eligible for benefits due to the short duration of employment. In this position, employment with the City of Oxnard is at will, and those selected for temporary placement retain the option, as does the City of Oxnard, to end employment at any time, with or without notice and with or without cause. Include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform computer data entry and information gathering for reports
Perform administrative tasks such as record-keeping and tracking, and basic paperwork
Develop in -person, over-the-phone, and via email communication and coordination skills with professional personnel
Perform other related duties as necessary
EDUCATION:
Completion of the 8th grade
Current OUHSD student
Currently enrolled in the OUHSD READY EEU1CTE course
EXPERIENCE:
- 14 years of age or older
- A valid First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be obtained within six months of appointment
- Obtain a Mandated Reporter Training Certificate within six months of appointment
- Must be able to communicate in English effectively both orally and in writing
Additional certifications, licenses, endorsements, and training may be required, depending on the assignment. You may be required to submit documented proof of these requirements. Selected candidate(s) must pass a thorough background investigation. Extra Help employees are "at-will" and are not provided any benefits other than those required by state or federal law.

For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools (G Suite), therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and the development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.
City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.
There are currently multiple Extra Help positions in the Cultural and Community Services Department.
Employees are required to participate in the City’s direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.
Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
