Description:
Under the direction of the Community Services Supervisor, the Transportation Specialist operates City vehicles and provides reliable and courteous transportation services for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities or mobility limitations. This position is responsible for transporting passengers to and from appointments, programs, and other approved destinations while maintaining a timely and professional transportation experience. Maximum of 950 hours per fiscal year.
The Transportation Specialist is responsible for conducting pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, maintaining accurate passenger and route records, assisting passengers with entering and exiting the vehicle, ensuring that all passengers are properly secured, and obeying all traffic laws of the road in accordance with California Vehicle Code and established safety procedures.
This position serves as a direct point of contact for transportation program participants and the public. The Transportation Specialist must demonstrate strong customer service, dependability, sound judgment, punctuality, and the ability to respond appropriately to routine transportation and passenger needs.Examples of Duties:

Transportation Operations
- Operate City vans and other assigned vehicles to transport senior citizens and individuals with disabilities or mobility limitations to and from approved destinations.
- Follow assigned transportation routes, schedules, passenger lists, and pick-up/drop-off locations while maintaining a punctual and dependable transportation schedule.
- Assist passengers with safely entering and exiting the vehicle as needed.
- Ensure passengers are properly seated and secured with seat belts and that applicable passenger safety procedures are followed.
- Communicate with passengers regarding transportation schedules, destinations, and routine service-related questions.
- Obey all traffic laws in accordance with California Vehicle Code.
- Provide professional, courteous, and respectful customer service to participants and members of the public.
- Answer phones, radios, and other communication devices as assigned.
- Respond to routine passenger questions and concerns and refer issues to the supervisor when appropriate.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with passengers, City staff, caregivers, and members of the public.
- Maintain passenger confidentiality and handle participant information in accordance with City policies and applicable requirements.
- Maintain accurate transportation records and documentation, including passenger attendance, mileage, routes, pick-up/drop-off information, and trip information.
- Review daily passenger lists and ensure transportation records are complete and accurate.
- Operate a computer and applicable software, scheduling systems, radios, telephones, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
- Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and check vehicles for cleanliness, safety, and proper operating condition.
- Properly check vehicles in and out and complete required inspections and vehicle maintenance procedures.
- Maintain assigned vehicles in a clean and orderly condition, including required washing and routine cleaning.
- Report mechanical failures, vehicle damage, safety concerns, or other vehicle-related issues promptly to the supervisor as appropriate.
- Ensure vehicles are secured and properly returned at the conclusion of each shift.
- Follow all City policies, transportation procedures, vehicle safety requirements, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Monitor passenger safety and respond appropriately to routine and emergency situations.
- Report accidents, injuries, passenger incidents, or other safety concerns promptly and accurately.
- Maintain required emergency and safety equipment in accordance with established procedures.
- Attend required meetings and trainings.
- Assist with special assignments related to community outreach when assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of Departmental operations.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- One (1) year experience operating a passenger van or similar vehicle; experience providing customer service to seniors, individuals with disabilities, or the general public.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and City special events.
- Possession of a California Class “C” driver’s license and with passenger endorsement and a good driving record throughout employment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment, a First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive hand movements may be required in the performance of assigned duties.
Ability to assist passengers with entering and exiting vehicles and to safely handle and transport equipment and supplies. Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 25 pounds or more as required.
Work is performed primarily in passenger vehicles, City facilities, and community locations. Employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions, traffic, noise, and frequent public interaction.
Training Requirements:
Training will be provided to the successful candidate for their role as a Transportation Specialist.
