A Brief Overview
Plans, directs, and coordinates patient care activities in patient care areas to maintain standards of patient care, and advises medical staff and administrators in matters related to nursing service by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. Oversees the operational leadership and growth in Flint Hills Surgical Services division. Is a part of the overall Flint Hills Leadership team and has strong ties to the Surgical Service Medical Director. The delivery of professional nursing care at Stormont-Vail Health is guided by Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the theory of Shared governance, both of which are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a BSN. Required
- Master's Degree Nursing or related field. Required
Experience Qualifications
- 5 years Current specialty clinical experience. Required
- 2 years Management experience within the last 5 years of employment. Required
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates understanding of the provision of service and knowledge of LEAN principles. Required

What you will do
- Coordinates, integrates, and evaluates functions and activities in Surgical Services & Sterile Processing (SPD). of nursing personnel. Provides strong leadership, able to motivate staff and respond to individual needs. Develops a strong team atmosphere, deals appropriately with staff conflict. Provides timely feedback to staff regarding issues/concerns.
- Develops and promotes cooperative working relationships with other departments both at Flint Hills campus and the Topeka campus. Communicates effectively with staff and physicians.
- Plans time efficiently, organizes workload effectively and delegates responsibilities appropriately. Prioritizes, identifies critical responsibilities and activities. Understands hospital-wide objectives and priorities; able to link department goals and operations to institutional goals.
- Formulates business plans/proposal for new programs/services that require prior consideration before approval can be given.
- Actively monitors, evaluates and grows the Robotics Program.
- Represents the hospital before various civic, professional, educational and business groups to discuss, market, interpret, and explain policies and programs and foster good public relations.
- Actively participates in the budget process; prepares annual patient care area operating and capital budget appropriate to department's care goals. Keeps budget on a monthly basis; able to explain any budget variances. Oversees appropriate cost containment measures. Directs the preparation and monitoring of individual nursing department(s) budget(s). Works with materials management in the ongoing evaluation of supplies/equipment to assure cost-effective and adequate patient care items.
- Coordinates implementation of methods and procedures to ensure achievement of objectives for continued improvement of services which contribute to the achievement of the critical success factors. Independently develops and implements multiple department level action plans.
- Provide support and administration to maintain Magnet designation. Demonstrates knowledge of the Kansas State Nurse Practice Act and follows the statutes and regulations therein. Demonstrates appropriate delegation of tasks and duties in the direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care and department activities in accordance with the Kansas State Nurse Practice Act.
- Analyzes and evaluates overall patient care program, utilizing LEAN principles and tools. Assists with organizational program development. Ensures compliance with standards of patient care.
- Reviews incidents and complaints and acts in a timely fashion. Responds to crisis situations/supports the provision of patient care as needed.
- Confers with patients/families. Responds to patient requests. Oversees the process of patient/family education. Confers with staff concerning problems of patient care and provides timely feedback.
- Is an active member on all system surgical meetings i.e. SIVAC.
- Oversees staff competency process. Identifies and meets staff development needs. Coaches and teaches staff, consistently provides leadership and clinical expertise. Evaluates the education and training needs of personnel and directs development and implementation of in-service programs through subordinate staff.
- Interprets policies and objectives of nursing service to staff and community groups. Recommends establishment or revision of policies, procedures, and methods and develops organizational structure and standards of performance. Advises and assists Vice President of Patient Care Services, and medical staff in planning and developing administrative and operational policies and procedures, facilities use and planning, and strategic planning in accordance with ongoing quality improvement processes.
- Works within system of scheduling/staffing to provide resources.
- Actively participates in recruiting, interviewing, hiring: collaborates with HR department. Maintains appropriate standards for discipline and termination.
- Conducts monthly staff meetings, which include administrative announcements, discussion of new programs, review of policies/procedures, quality improvement, problem resolution, staff issues and follow-through on previous month's issues.
