Model: 50/50 English-Hebrew Immersion
Our Mission
Sela was founded to dismantle educational inequity, racial segregation, and cultural isolation. We provide a space where students are celebrated as they begin their journey as global citizens. As a bilingual Hebrew-English school, we proudly serve over 280 students from Pre-K3 through 5th grade in the heart of DC.
The Role
As a Special Education Teacher, you will serve as a case manager and teacher within our 50/50 English-Hebrew immersion model. You will work collaboratively with English and Hebrew language teachers to support students with disabilities through push-in and pull-out instruction, co-teaching, and individualized support. You will develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), lead IEP meetings, and deliver high-quality specially designed instruction in ELA and math to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
In addition to special education responsibilities, you may provide targeted literacy and math interventions as part of Sela’s Response to Intervention (RTI) process. This work may include collaborating with the RTI team and general education teachers to identify student needs, implement evidence-based interventions, monitor progress, and determine appropriate next steps. Throughout your work, you will help ensure that students have access to meaningful learning opportunities across both languages.
Key Responsibilities
- Case Management Excellence: Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Coordinate and facilitate multidisciplinary IEP meetings with families, clinicians, and administrators.
- Dual Language Instructional Support: Design specialized lesson plans that adapt grade-level standards for students with diverse learning needs, taking into account the cognitive and linguistic demands of a dual-language environment.
- Data-Driven Instruction and Advocacy: Regularly analyze assessment and progress-monitoring data to inform instruction, tailor interventions, and advocate for student needs during IEP meetings.
- RTI Collaboration and Intervention: As needed, provide targeted literacy and/or math interventions as part of the school’s RTI process. Collaborate with the RTI team and general education teachers to identify learning gaps, implement research-based interventions, monitor student progress, and inform decisions about additional supports.
- Strategic Collaboration: Partner closely with Hebrew immersion teachers and English-language teachers to bridge content and language instruction, ensuring that accommodations and instructional strategies are consistently implemented throughout the school day.
- Compliance and Integrity: Maintain accurate records in accordance with IDEA, FERPA, and applicable DC policies, ensuring that timelines for evaluations, IEP meetings, annual reviews, and other required processes are met.
Instruction and Curriculum
- Plan and deliver specially designed instruction (SDI) in ELA and math, aligned with student IEP goals and individual learning needs.
- Modify and adapt grade-level curricula to ensure students have access to grade-level learning while maintaining high expectations and removing barriers to participation and achievement.
- Utilize research-based instructional strategies and interventions to address foundational skill gaps and support student growth.
- When appropriate, provide targeted small-group or individual literacy and math interventions through the RTI process, using assessment data to guide instruction and progress monitoring to evaluate effectiveness.
- Work with Hebrew co-teachers to develop visual aids, scaffolds, and modified vocabulary lists to support students during Hebrew-immersion blocks.
Classroom Environment and Student Engagement
- Implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and restorative practices tailored to students’ individual behavioral needs and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
- Foster student self-advocacy, helping learners understand their individual learning profiles, recognize their strengths, and develop strategies to navigate challenges.
Family Engagement and Communication
- Serve as a primary point of contact for families of students with IEPs, providing regular updates on student progress toward IEP goals.
- Empower families by explaining the special education process and sharing strategies to support learning at home in a bilingual context.
- Collaborate with external providers, including occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and psychologists, to support students’ academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; a master’s degree is preferred.
- Expertise: Strong knowledge of special education practices, instructional strategies, and core academic content. A major, minor, or graduate degree in education or a core content area is desirable.
- Experience: At least two years of elementary teaching experience, with a demonstrated ability to support student growth.
- Skills: Exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to engage and motivate a diverse group of learners.
- Eligibility: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
