Hiring Unit:
Office of the Associate Provost, Rayonnement du français

Position Summary:
The Rayonnement du français team creates informal, social, cultural and experiential opportunities to live and practise French, for students and members of the McGill community. These activities are open to anyone who wants to practise French, socialize in French, or simply live more of their McGill experience in French, whatever their level or relationship to the language.

Successful candidates will join a team of student facilitators who bring this programming to life, from conversation circles and social activities on campus to cultural events and outings in Montreal and beyond.

The goal is to give participants memorable experiences in French throughout their time at McGill, help them build connections, and introduce them to the diversity of French-speaking cultures in a friendly and engaging setting.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead social activities in French and help build a welcoming, lively community around the French language.
  • Facilitate conversation circles and group activities that encourage exchange and French practice.
  • Welcome participants and create a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable taking part.
  • Encourage conversation and adapt facilitation to participants' profiles, interests and levels of French.
  • Lead or co-lead cultural activities, events and outings in Montreal.
  • Suggest ideas and help prepare activities, both as part of a team and independently.
  • Take part, as needed, in welcome, orientation and promotional activities related to Rayonnement du français initiatives.
  • Help promote activities and, as needed, create content for Rayonnement du français communication channels and social media.
  • Help with setup and logistics for activities and events.
  • Perform other related duties.

 Workload:
The schedule is flexible, from 5 to 10 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours depending on the successful candidate's availability and the needs of the program. Schedules are set around each facilitator's classes and availability. The successful candidate must be able to be present on campus and take part in the activities and outings planned as part of the programming.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Be enrolled at McGill as an undergraduate or graduate student and in good academic standing.
  • Have a strong enough command of French to comfortably lead conversations and activities in French.
  • Be personable, punctual and highly conscientious.
  • Show creativity, enthusiasm and kindness.
  • Know how to foster exchange and encourage participation, including from quieter participants.
  • Be comfortable interacting with people from a range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Be flexible, independent and resourceful.

Assets (not required):

  • Experience leading activities or groups.
  • Knowledge of the field of language learning.
  • Experience in teaching, tutoring or mentoring.
  • Experience in communications or content creation.
