About Us

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is the state government agency created to conserve and sustain the state’s fish and wildlife resources through research, scientific management, wise use and public input. The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina’s fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The NCWRC Mission is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation.

Description of Work

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for an Assistant Hatchery Superintendent (Wildlife Conservation Technician II) for the Inland Fisheries Division.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Inland Fisheries Division manages, conserves, enhances, and restores the State’s freshwater fishes, mollusks, crayfish and supporting aquatic habitats through fisheries research, fisheries management, hatchery operation, and habitat conservation.

The primary purpose of the Assistant Superintendent is to act as a Team Leader of a smaller work unit consisting of 2-3 Fish Culturists and is responsible for performance of tasks resulting in production and distribution of warmwater and coldwater fishes. These activities include participating in production planning, propagation, rearing, transportation, and distribution of the appropriate species, number, and sizes of selected fish species, permit compliance, reporting, coordination, and operation and maintenance of supporting facilities and equipment.

A Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week. This position is subject to be called back at any time. Hours and days vary with special assignments requiring work on occasional nights, weekends, holidays, and extended days. Overnight travel may also be required on occasion. This position is based at WRC’s Armstrong State Fish Hatchery located in Marion, NC (McDowell Co.) This position also requires its incumbent to reside at the Armstrong State Fish Hatchery.

RECRUITMENT RANGE: $37,377 - $51,959

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of fish culture or biology;
  • Experience collecting and recording physical, chemical, and biological data;
  • Experience operating or maintaining a variety of equipment and tools used at a fish hatchery (ex. farm tractor, fish feeder, lawn mower, stocking truck, other motor vehicles, lab equipment, power and manual hand tools);
  • Experience constructing, maintaining, and repairing hatchery equipment, buildings, and other facilities;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with hatchery staff, other agency staff, cooperating agencies and organizations, and the general public.

 

 

Special Qualifications/Requirements:

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license required within 90 days of hire.

Classification Specs | NC Office of Human Resources

Associate Degree in wildlife, fisheries or construction management from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience which has included the management of wildlife or fisheries resources or the operation of heavy equipment;

OR

an equivalent combination of training and experience.
