Position Summary...

We are looking for a Senior Director, Software Engineering to lead the Orchestration Foundation team within Runtime Platform at Walmart's India Development Center. The leader will own the key products serving Walmart's entire application ecosystem and must combine deep technical depth in cloud-native and systems engineering with the ability to build strong teams, define clear direction, and deliver outcomes at Walmart scale.

What you'll do...

ABOUT TEAM : ORCHESTRATION FOUNDATION

Global Tech Platform (GTP) delivers the core infrastructure and engineering capabilities that every product and engineering team at Walmart depends on. Runtime Platforms (RTP) sits at the center of GTP, providing the compute, orchestration, traffic, and operational fabric that powers Walmart Cloud Native Platform (WCNP) and the broader application estate across private cloud, public cloud (Azure, GCP), and store-edge environments.

Orchestration Foundation is the team within Runtime Platforms responsible for the workload orchestration layer across Walmart's entire compute estate. Key products include:

·       Kubernetes Platform (WCNP): Multi-cluster lifecycle management across cloud, private data center, and store-edge.

·       OneOps (VM Orchestration): VM-based workload platform covering OS and Java lifecycle automation.

·       Device Orchestration Platform (DOP): Automates store device deployments (POS, CoSTL devices) with policy-based, wave-controlled rollouts across US and international markets.

·       Process Orchestration: Conductor based workflow Orchestration engine at scale.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

·       Own the roadmap and deliver outcomes: Define the multi-year technical roadmap for Orchestration Foundation. Translate customer and platform problems into clear requirements, measurable goals, and delivery plans. Own outcomes across WCNP Kubernetes, OneOps, DOP, continuous profiling, cost optimization, and autonomous operations.

·       Drive platform architecture and design: Lead architecture decisions for the orchestration layer. Ensure systems are designed for the right tenancy model, scale, decoupling, extensibility, and operational simplicity. Own the platform design from first principles, not by incremental patching.

·       Go deep on the technology: Stay technically grounded in Kubernetes internals, cluster lifecycle management, VM orchestration, device deployment platforms, and workflow orchestration engines. Engage directly with architects and engineers on the most complex design and operational problems.

·       Improve availability, performance, and efficiency: Set and deliver on reliability targets for WCNP, OneOps, and DOP. Drive engineering programs for latency, throughput, and availability improvements. Lead cloud resource utilization optimization through continuous profiling, right-sizing, ARM64 compute adoption, and workload rationalization to reduce infrastructure costs year-over-year.

·       Eliminate waste and automate manual work: Identify manual, high-overhead operations across the team's platforms and build automation to eliminate them. Advance autonomous and agentic operations via Kubie, Wibey, and Forma, reducing MTTR and manual intervention for common platform problems.

·       Set up mechanisms and run the program: Establish OKRs, metrics, and execution rhythms across Orchestration Foundation. Run a structured program with clear milestones, cross-team dependency management, and stakeholder alignment. Maintain visibility for GTP leadership on roadmap progress and risks.

·       Manage cross-team dependencies and stakeholders: Partner with Runtime Platform peers, GTP leadership, security, finance, and application teams. Navigate dependencies across teams above and below in the stack. Build the right level of give-and-take with product and business stakeholders.

·       Design the org and grow the team: Own org design including spans, layers, and the right balance of builders and operators. Hire senior engineers and architects. Drive calibration, promotion decisions, and performance management. Invest in growing senior technical ICs and engineering managers.

·       Build the platform-managed services model: Develop the shared, multi-tenant WCNP platform model to onboard teams like Camunda, Vespa, and WQS on standardized infrastructure. Define the repeatable onboarding path instead of one-off solutions.

·       Ensure security, compliance, and platform resilience: Own Prod/Non-Prod segmentation, PCI environment compliance, vulnerability remediation, and quarterly DR testing across WCNP and OneOps. Set SLO and SLA frameworks and enforce them.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

·       Track record of delivering impact from first principles : 18+ years of engineering experience with a clear record of building products and platforms that delivered measurable business outcomes. Ability to start from the customer problem, define requirements, set metrics, and own end-to-end delivery.

·       Greenfield system design capability: Demonstrated ability to design large-scale, complex systems from scratch. Deep understanding of tenancy models, scale, decoupling, domain modeling, extensibility, and API design. Can articulate the reasoning behind architectural choices under detailed technical questioning.

·       Technical depth in orchestration and platform systems : Strong hands-on depth in Kubernetes, container orchestration, and cloud-native platform internals. Knowledge of VM orchestration, device management platforms, or workflow orchestration engines. Comfortable going deep until reaching the boundary of current knowledge.

·       Engineering and operational excellence: Experience driving measurable improvements in system availability, latency, and throughput for large-scale platforms. Proven ability to optimize public cloud infrastructure costs through utilization analysis, profiling, and workload rationalization. Track record of automation programs that eliminated significant manual operational overhead.

·       Program execution and stakeholder management : Experience setting up OKRs, metrics, and execution mechanisms for large engineering programs. Able to manage cross-team dependencies, work effectively with teams above and below in the stack, and build trust with product and business stakeholders through a balanced approach.

·       Org design and talent management : Experience designing engineering organizations with appropriate spans, layers, and builder/operator ratios. Strong hiring instincts. Experience running calibration, managing promotions, and developing senior technical ICs and engineering managers.

·       Multi-cloud and private cloud experience: Working knowledge of Azure and GCP for production workloads. Experience operating Kubernetes and VM platforms on private data center infrastructure (OpenStack or similar) and store-edge environments.

·       Clear communication at all levels: Ability to turn complex technical domains into clear roadmaps and priorities. Comfortable presenting strategy and progress to VP-level and above. Able to influence peers and cross-functional partners without direct authority.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·       Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.

·       18+ years of software engineering experience with depth in platform infrastructure, distributed systems, or cloud-native technologies.

·       6+ years in senior engineering leadership roles, managing teams of 30 or more engineers.

·       Demonstrated expertise in Kubernetes and container orchestration in a production enterprise environment.

·       Experience owning and delivering platform products across cloud and hybrid environments.

·       Proven ability to define and execute a multi-year technology roadmap.

·       Experience delivering measurable infrastructure cost reduction and operational efficiency improvements at scale.

·       Strong communication skills with experience presenting to senior leadership.
