DEFINITION:
Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of general and manual duties related to arena maintenance, arena disciplines preparation, and related activities for event centers and equestrian facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring the facilities and grounds are well-maintained, safe, and prepared for a variety of events, including equestrian shows, community gatherings, and other special events

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Facilities Superintendent, Ingalls Event Center Supervisor and/or Facilities Supervisor

TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities and essential duties performed on a frequent and recurring basis by an incumbent in this series include the following:

  • Performs a variety of manual tasks involving maintenance, repair, cleaning, and upkeep of the Ingalls Event Center facilities, including The Barn, The Hall, The Arenas, The Turf, warm-up arenas, fencing, pipe panels, and grounds to prepare for shows and events. Requires knowledge of arena footing materials and arena grooming techniques.
  • Maintains and repairs park and arena facilities, fences, pipe panels, warm-up arenas, and other equestrian-related infrastructure. Assists with trail, barn, and facility upkeep to ensure safety and optimal condition for events.
  • Supports event operations by performing landscape upkeep, safety inspections, repairing water leaks, weed abatement, and general site cleanup before and after events. Responsible for checking gates for security and ensuring the event grounds are safe and presentable.
  • Transports, assembles, and dismantles event equipment such as stages, bleachers, and signage to facilitate efficient event setup and breakdown.
  • Operates a wide range of equipment including hand and power tools, tractors, dump trucks, water trucks, street sweepers, forklifts, scissor lifts, Drag Master and Black Widow Groomer, performing routine maintenance and safety checks on all tools and machinery.
  • Completes and maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, inspection forms, and incident reports to support safety compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service by serving as a reliable and professional point of contact for clients throughout all event phases. Proactively communicates client needs, assists with event planning, and ensures all logistical elements such as arena grooming and equipment setup are handled efficiently.
  • Oversee court-appointed workers performing maintenance tasks and completing related paperwork.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, including evening and weekend events.

  1. Ability to learn and perform general parks and event maintenance assignments.
  2. Perform heavy physical labor requiring strength, dexterity, and coordination.
  3. Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment.
  4. Communicate professionally with staff, supervisors, and the public, using proper English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  5. Use computer hardware, software, and peripherals relevant to job tasks.
  6. Work independently and manage time and projects efficiently.
  7. Ability to maintain records and perform routine equipment maintenance.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Events Maintenance Worker I: Entry-level, performing manual and semi-skilled maintenance duties under close supervision.

Events Maintenance Worker II: Intermediate level, performing more complex tasks independently with limited supervision, demonstrating strong problem-solving abilities.

Events Maintenance Worker III: Advanced level, possessing extensive knowledge of various events at Ingalls Event Center, working independently to ensure effective event preparation and facility maintenance with minimal supervision.

CONTACTS AND RELATIONSHIP
Both classes in this series have the majority of their interaction with the Community Operations Department and the  Public Works Department staff, City employees and the public.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
The knowledge and abilities which are required to perform the duties and responsibilities of this class are as follows:

Events Maintenance Worker I: Possession of High School Diploma or equivalent. Two years of maintenance or grounds experience is preferred.

Events Maintenance Worker II: Possession of High School Diploma or equivalent. At least three years of maintenance experience, including two years as Events Maintenance Worker I. Works independently on skilled maintenance tasks related to event facilities and grounds. Knowledgeable in arena grooming, fencing, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and general repairs. Coordinates with staff and event clients to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely.

Events Maintenance Worker III: Possession of a High School diploma or equivalent. Extensive maintenance experience preferred. Must have deep knowledge of various event types held at Ingalls Event Center. Works independently to ensure efficient and accurate event preparation and facility maintenance with minimal supervision.

License
California Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement required within one year of appointment.

Desired Qualifications
Completion of The League of Agricultural & Equine Centers Footing Academy or equivalent training is highly desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear, walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and move materials, tools and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Ability to handle heights of over 50’.

Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with constant interruptions; and interact with City staff, other organizations and the public.




EMERGENCY SERVICES: All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.   Employee must complete required FEMA courses within six months of employment.
